Vedanta Aluminium,
India’s largest aluminium producer, has earned a place among the Top 10 percent
of global companies in the S&P Global Sustainability Yearbook 2026,
supported by an impressive Corporate Sustainability Assessment (CSA) score of
84 out of 100. The recognition marks the company’s first-ever Top 10 percent
distinction in the aluminium industry and comes on the back of its second
global rank in the S&P Global CSA 2025, a position it has maintained for
the third consecutive year.
The Sustainability
Yearbook is one of the most respected global benchmarks for corporate
sustainability performance. In the latest assessment cycle, over 9,200
companies across 59 industries were evaluated through S&P Global’s rigorous
Corporate Sustainability Assessment, but only 848 companies qualified as
Yearbook Members. Within this select group, the Top 10 percent category is
reserved for organisations that demonstrate superior sustainability performance
compared to their global peers in their respective sectors.
S&P Global’s
Corporate Sustainability Assessment is widely regarded as one of the most
comprehensive environmental, social and governance (ESG) benchmarking
frameworks in the world. The evaluation measures companies across a broad range
of criteria, including climate action, operational transparency, risk
management, environmental stewardship and responsible business conduct. Vedanta
Aluminium’s strong performance across these parameters reflects the company’s
consistent progress in strengthening its sustainability framework while
integrating ESG principles into its operational and strategic decision-making.
Commenting on the
recognition, Rajiv Kumar, CEO, Vedanta Aluminium, said, “Being recognized among
the Top 10% of global companies in the Sustainability Yearbook 2026 is a
milestone for Vedanta Aluminium. Sustainability is central to our growth
strategy, shaping how we innovate, operate, and create long-term value for our
stakeholders. This recognition reinforces our commitment to responsible
production and continuous improvement as we work towards building a globally
competitive, future-ready aluminium business.”
Over the past few
years, Vedanta Aluminium has significantly accelerated its sustainability
journey through focused initiatives across climate action, resource efficiency,
responsible operations and community development. The company has achieved an
8.96 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions intensity since FY21,
bringing its emissions down to 17.01 tonnes of CO₂
equivalent per tonne of aluminium, even as it continues to expand production
capacity.
The company has also
made strong strides in renewable energy adoption. In FY25 alone, Vedanta
Aluminium consumed 1.57 billion units of renewable energy and has set an
ambitious target to scale its renewable energy capacity to 1,500 megawatts by
2030 as part of its broader commitment to achieving Net Zero emissions by 2050
or earlier.
Sustainability
efforts extend beyond emissions reduction. Vedanta Aluminium has achieved 100
percent fly ash utilisation, ensuring that all fly ash generated across its
operations is effectively repurposed in cement manufacturing, road
construction, brick production and mine backfilling. The company is also
advancing circular economy solutions for bauxite residue (red mud) through
research collaborations with the Indian Council of Agricultural Research,
exploring its potential applications in soil conditioning, agriculture and land
restoration.
In parallel, Vedanta
Aluminium has undertaken habitat development and biodiversity restoration
projects in partnership with PwC, aimed at strengthening carbon sinks and
promoting ecological restoration in operational regions. Its water stewardship
initiatives have also gained momentum, with extensive conservation and
recycling systems in place, including high water recycling rates and zero
liquid discharge systems at several facilities, significantly reducing
dependence on freshwater sources.
Resource efficiency
remains a core focus area for the company. In FY25, Vedanta Aluminium recycled
and reused more than 14.6 million tonnes of waste, enhancing sustainable
manufacturing practices through by-product utilisation and circular production
models.
Beyond environmental initiatives, the company continues to expand its social development footprint. Vedanta Aluminium’s community programmes currently impact more than 1.75 million women and children across Odisha and Chhattisgarh, focusing on education, healthcare, sustainable livelihoods and women’s empowerment in communities surrounding its operational areas.
The latest recognition from S&P Global reinforces Vedanta Aluminium’s growing reputation as a sustainability-driven industrial leader, reflecting its efforts to combine operational excellence with responsible growth and long-term value creation.
