Vedanta Aluminium has marked a significant leap in sustainable mining by slashing carbon emissions by 50% at its Kodingamali bauxite mines through the deployment of Electric Vehicle (EV) loaders, reinforcing its ambitious march toward net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

The transition, which replaces half of the diesel-powered loading fleet with electric alternatives, has already delivered measurable impact. At Singaram Siding, where operations previously relied on six diesel loaders, the new balanced 3:3 diesel-to-EV configuration has reduced emissions by 120 kilograms of CO per hour. This shift not only accelerates decarbonization but also brings immediate gains in air quality, noise reduction, energy efficiency, and reduced dependence on fossil fuels.

The move is part of the company’s broader strategy to electrify its operations at scale. Vedanta Aluminium already operates the country’s largest fleet of lithium-ion battery-powered electric forklifts across Odisha and Chhattisgarh, underlining its commitment to integrating clean technologies into core business functions while advancing toward its net-zero target.

Commenting on the milestone, Vedanta Aluminium Business CEO Pranab Kumar Bhattacharyya said, “At Vedanta Aluminium, we view Electric Vehicles as a sustainable and renewable source of energy that powers both our operations and our planet’s future. Our investment in EV loaders at Kodingamali demonstrates how clean technology delivers immediate emission cuts while building long-term resilience. This milestone strengthens our net-zero journey and proves sustainable innovation drives mining excellence without compromise.”

Beyond environmental gains, the adoption of electric drivetrains is also enhancing operational efficiency by significantly reducing maintenance requirements compared to conventional diesel machinery. The hourly reduction of 120 kg in CO emissions translates into thousands of tonnes saved annually, positioning the initiative as a benchmark for responsible mining practices. Additionally, reduced noise levels contribute to ecological balance in sensitive and remote mining regions.

With its ‘Transforming for Good’ philosophy, Vedanta Aluminium continues to translate sustainability ambitions into tangible outcomes, setting new standards for green mining while delivering long-term value to communities, the environment, and India’s industrial growth story.
