Vedanta Aluminium, India’s largest producer of
aluminium, has strengthened its commitment to workplace inclusivity by onboarding
seven specially-abled professionals at its mega aluminium plant in Jharsuguda.
The initiative marks a significant milestone in the company’s diversity, equity
and inclusion (DEI) journey, reinforcing its focus on creating meaningful
employment opportunities while upholding the principles of equal opportunity,
accessibility and dignity at the workplace.
The offer letters
were presented by Dr. Kiran Bedi, renowned civil servant and former Lieutenant
Governor of Puducherry, during her recent visit to the company’s Jharsuguda
operations, which is the world’s largest aluminium plant. The newly recruited
professionals, who experience different forms of motor, visual and
speech-related impairments, come from diverse academic backgrounds ranging from
diploma holders to graduates. They have been assigned plant-based roles such as
Shift Coordinator, Junior Assistant, Storekeeper and Supervisor, commensurate
with their qualifications and professional experience.
Commenting on the
initiative, C Chandru, CEO, Vedanta Jharsuguda, said, “We believe that
inclusion is not just about fulfilling a social responsibility, but is also a
key source of strength for an organization as it promotes better organizational
perspectives and decision-making. This initiative reflects our commitment to
creating a workplace where every individual is respected, empowered and given
the opportunity to grow with dignity.”
Adding his views,
Pankaj Sureka, CHRO, Vedanta Jharsuguda said, “Inclusive hiring is a core
aspect of our people practice. This initiative reflects our commitment to
ensuring equal opportunities for all professionals, supported by accessible
infrastructure, progressive policies and a culture that values the contribution
of every team member.”
One of the
professionals, Somyarani Dash, Shift Coordinator, said, “Being given this
opportunity has been life-changing. This is not just about employment, it is
about respect, confidence and a sense of belonging. The support, training and
encouragement we receive here make me look forward to contributing my best
efforts to the success of the organization.”
Upon joining, each of
the professionals will undergo a comprehensive safety training programme,
followed by tailored sessions and on-the-job exposure aligned with their
respective job profiles. The hiring initiative was implemented with the active
support of Sangita Meher, District Employment Officer (DEO), whose
collaboration played a crucial role in facilitating employment opportunities
for specially-abled professionals.
To ensure a safe, seamless and respectful work environment, Vedanta Aluminium has also undertaken necessary infrastructure and accessibility enhancements at the deployment locations. These measures aim to enable ease of movement, effective workplace integration and sustained productivity.
In the past year, the unit also onboarded seven transgender employees in roles within security and housekeeping, marking another important step towards greater representation and inclusion in the workplace. The milestone highlights the power of collaboration between leadership, local administration and the community in building a more equitable future.
