Vedanta Aluminium, India’s largest aluminium producer, has launched Agni Jagrukta Abhiyaan, a monthly safety awareness programme aimed at extending the company’s strong safety culture beyond the workplace and into the homes of employees and business partners. Through structured training sessions and practical safety demonstrations, the initiative underscores Vedanta’s belief that true safety excellence is built on robust systems complemented by continuous awareness, preparedness and confidence — both at work and at home.

The Agni Jagrukta Abhiyaan initiative is designed to empower employees and their families with practical knowledge on critical aspects of domestic safety, including fire prevention, safe handling of LPG cylinders, electrical safety and overall household risk management. A key highlight of the programme is the live fire safety demonstrations, during which participants are trained to identify potential fire hazards, operate fire extinguishers correctly and respond effectively during emergency situations. Family members actively participate in these sessions, making them highly interactive, engaging and practical.

The inaugural awareness session was conducted in the presence of senior safety professionals from Vedanta Aluminium and its business partners, including Debabrata Sarkar, EHS Head – STEAG, and Vinod Mishra, Consultant to Project Director – STEAG. The session witnessed enthusiastic participation from employees and their family members. The initiative concluded with a felicitation ceremony recognising the active involvement of families, reinforcing a shared sense of responsibility and collective ownership of safety practices.

Speaking about the initiative, C. Chandru, CEO, Vedanta Jharsuguda, said, “Safety is the foundation of sustainable operations and strong communities. With initiatives such as the Agni Jagrukta Abhiyaan, we are taking decisive steps to ensure that safety awareness reaches every home associated with Vedanta Jharsuguda. By conducting this program every month, we aim to build long-term awareness, confidence, and resilience within our community.”

The Agni Jagrukta Abhiyaan further strengthens Vedanta Jharsuguda’s comprehensive safety-first approach. The plant is home to Agnivahini, an all-women firefighting team comprising over 100 members, and features multiple safety parks that familiarise employees with essential aspects of plant safety. In addition, the unit regularly conducts mock drills in collaboration with expert agencies such as the Odisha Directorate of Factories and Boilers, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the Odisha State Disaster Management Authority (OSDMA).

By institutionalising Agni Jagrukta Abhiyaan as a monthly programme, Vedanta Aluminium’s Jharsuguda unit is creating a sustained movement focused on awareness, preparedness and protection. The initiative stands as a strong testament to the company’s commitment to safeguarding lives and fostering resilient, safety-conscious communities that extend well beyond the factory gates.
