Vedanta Group has launched a month-long Sustainability Month initiative centred on climate action, water conservation, biodiversity, waste management, health and safety and community welfare, as part of its broader commitment to nature-positive growth across its operations.

Ahead of World Environmental Health Day, the group announced the launch of its new #GoodStartsWithUs campaign, calling on employees to make sustainability a part of everyday practices and collectively contribute towards environmental health and community well-being.

The Sustainability Month, which began on September 21, seeks to bring together sustainability initiatives across Vedanta's businesses under four broad themes — Climate Change and Biodiversity, Waste and Water, Health and Safety, and Community Welfare.

In line with this year's theme, "Environmental Health: Standing with Science to Protect Communities", employees will undertake at least one sustainability action every week, focusing on measures such as reducing energy consumption, conserving water, supporting biodiversity and managing waste responsibly.

The campaign will also feature plantation and clean-up drives across operating locations, along with Sustainability Carnivals featuring interactive activities, workshops and do-it-yourself initiatives aimed at promoting waste segregation, reuse, upcycling and waste reduction.

"At Vedanta, we believe that sustainability is not just a goal but a shared responsibility that begins with individual action. Through #GoodStartsWithUs, we are bringing together our people, technology and scientific capabilities to turn intent into measurable action," a company spokesperson said.

The initiative is aligned with several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, including SDG 3 on Good Health and Well-being, SDG 6 on Clean Water and Sanitation, SDG 12 on Responsible Consumption and Production, SDG 13 on Climate Action and SDG 15 on Life on Land.

Vedanta said it is increasingly using technology, data and scientific assessments to strengthen environmental safeguards across its businesses. Continuous Emissions Monitoring Systems, ambient monitoring stations and the Enablon ESG platform are being used for real-time monitoring and data-led interventions.

At Hindustan Zinc, advanced recovery technologies are being deployed to recover zinc, lead and silver from residues. A proposed tailings reprocessing plant is expected to process more than 86 million tonnes of legacy tailings and recover over 860 kilotonnes of zinc, converting historical waste into a resource.

The group said its decarbonisation and resource-efficiency efforts include 20 GW of renewable energy capacity, mitigation of 28 million tonnes of carbon over the past five years and a 14 per cent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions intensity from its FY2020-21 baseline.

Water stewardship is another key focus area, with initiatives spanning water recycling, rainwater harvesting, groundwater recharge and wastewater treatment. During FY2025-26, Vedanta said approximately 90 million kilolitres of water was recycled and nearly 70 community ponds were restored.

At Hindustan Zinc, advanced water-recovery systems have saved more than 4.2 million cubic metres of water, helping reduce dependence on freshwater resources while supporting communities around its operations.

As India works towards its target of achieving net-zero emissions by 2070, Vedanta said it would continue integrating environmental stewardship, resource efficiency and community well-being into its approach to responsible industrial growth.

Anchored in its broader purpose of #DeshKiZarooratonKeLiye, the group said its science-led sustainability approach is aimed at supporting India's development journey while contributing to a cleaner, more resilient and sustainable future.
