Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani on Sunday visited the
Indian Metals & Ferro Alloys Ltd (IMFA) plant at Therubali in Odisha's Rayagada
district, fuelling fresh speculation over the conglomerate's next major
investment in the mineral-rich region as it accelerates its expansion plans
across the state.
Adani arrived at the IMFA facility by helicopter and held a
closed-door meeting for nearly an hour with senior company executives, district
administration officials and key members of the Adani Group. Among those
accompanying him was Karan Adani, Managing Director of Adani Ports and SEZ Ltd,
signalling the strategic significance of the visit.
According to officials, the meeting focused on assessing the
region's industrial potential and infrastructure preparedness. Senior technical
teams from the Adani Group undertook a detailed review of land availability,
transport connectivity and logistics infrastructure around the project site,
indicating that the conglomerate is evaluating multiple parameters before
finalising its next investment in the district.
IMFA also confirmed the high-profile visit through a post on
social media platform X.
The visit assumes significance as the Adani Group has been
steadily strengthening its presence in Odisha, one of India's most
resource-rich industrial states. Industry observers believe Sunday's inspection
could be linked to the group's long-term plans in the aluminium and mining
value chain, particularly after its acquisition of bauxite mining assets in
Kashipur block of Rayagada district.
The conglomerate has already established a local office under
the banner of Kalinga Aluminium Limited, reinforcing expectations that Odisha
could emerge as a key hub for its downstream metals business.
Earlier, nearly 1,700 acres of land had been identified in
Kolnara block for setting up an industrial project. However, progress on land
acquisition has remained slow as the proposed site comprises a significantly
higher proportion of privately owned land than government land, posing
challenges for project execution.
Gautam Adani's visit has therefore, reignited discussions in
industrial and policy circles about whether the group is preparing to revive
its manufacturing plans in Rayagada or evaluate an alternative investment model
aligned with the region's abundant mineral resources and improving
connectivity.
The Rayagada visit also comes close on the heels of another
ambitious proposal by the Adani Group that could redefine Odisha's industrial
landscape. The conglomerate has recently proposed setting up two nuclear power
plants in the state with a combined generation capacity of 5,600 MW, involving
an estimated investment of Rs 1.5 lakh crore.
If approved, the proposal would mark one of the country's
largest private-sector investments in civil nuclear power and represent a
significant milestone in India's efforts to expand private participation in the
strategically important clean energy segment.
The proposal was recently presented before the Odisha
government by an Adani delegation led by Subrat Tripathy, President (Business
Development), Adani Ports and SEZ, during a meeting with Deputy Chief Minister
and Energy Minister Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo in Bhubaneswar.
Taken together, the nuclear power proposal, expanding mining interests and the latest high-level visit to Rayagada underscore the Adani Group's growing strategic focus on Odisha. With abundant reserves of bauxite, chromite, coal and iron ore, alongside improving industrial infrastructure and proactive policy support from the state government, Odisha is increasingly emerging as one of the conglomerate's priority investment destinations.
While the Adani Group has not officially disclosed the purpose of Sunday's visit or announced any new project, the presence of its top leadership, coupled with detailed technical assessments on the ground, has intensified expectations that a major investment announcement for Rayagada could be on the horizon.
