The Aditya Birla Group on Thursday announced its entry into the wires and cables market with the launch of Ultravolt, backed by an investment of ₹1,800 crore and positioned as the second-largest player in the wires segment by capacity.

The new venture marks the diversified conglomerate’s fourth major foray into a new business in three years, following its entry into paints with Birla Opus, B2B e-commerce with Birla Pivot and jewellery retail with Indriya.

Kumar Mangalam Birla, Chairman of the $72-billion Aditya Birla Group, said the wires and cables industry is emerging as a critical component of India’s next phase of economic development, driven by urbanisation, electrification and digitisation.

“Wires and cables are becoming central to India’s next phase of development. They sit at the intersection of three mega trends in the Indian economy — urbanisation, electrification, and digitisation,” Birla said.

He pointed to the expected addition of more than 100 million homes over the next decade, expanding energy infrastructure and the rapid growth of data centres as key factors likely to drive a strong expansion in the category.

“Our distinctive advantage comes from a deep understanding of the product, its underlying components, and the adjacent ecosystems,” he said.

Birla said building successful new businesses has increasingly become an integral part of the group’s strategy and a key source of differentiation.

“In recent years, successful new business creation has itself become a core part of the group’s DNA and an important source of differentiation for the group. I increasingly see the Aditya Birla Group as providing the platform and engine for new bets,” he said.

Ultravolt will initially offer a comprehensive portfolio of wires, cables and conduits, with plans to progressively expand across the full kilovolt spectrum, specialty cable applications and a wider range of electrical accessories.

The business is anchored by a new manufacturing facility at Jhagadia in Gujarat’s Bharuch district. The plant has an installed capacity of 10,98,000 km and commenced commercial production on September 1, 2026.

Dilip Gaur, Director, Ultravolt, said the company is taking a pan-India approach from the outset rather than testing the market region by region.

“Our plan is to reach more than one lakh retailers and further activate availability through over 5,000 UltraTech Building Solutions (UBS) outlets,” Gaur said.

The company plans to roll out its products across more than 500 districts and 6,000 pin codes initially, underlining its focus on rapid nationwide distribution.

Sriram Rangarajan, CEO, Ultravolt, said the company is launching with a portfolio covering home wires, flexible wires and cables for residential, commercial, industrial and infrastructure applications.

“Over time, we plan to expand into a broader range of electrical accessories,” he said.

The group said its decision to enter the wires and cables market is based on strong structural growth prospects as well as the opportunity to disrupt an established category by leveraging its brand, capital, scale and ecosystem capabilities.

Birla said Ultravolt would seek to compete beyond pricing, with product quality, technology, availability and customer service forming the key pillars of its differentiation strategy.

The launch comes as India’s infrastructure and construction ecosystem enters a period of sustained expansion, with rising electricity demand, urban development, industrial investment and data-centre capacity expected to support long-term demand for wires and cables.
