AIIMS Bhubaneswar has secured research grants worth Rs 32.2 crore through 187 projects in 2025-26, strengthening its efforts to advance cancer diagnostics, infectious disease research and evidence-based patient care, the institute said on Thursday.

The premier medical institute is focusing on translating biomedical research into advanced diagnostic facilities and patient-centric healthcare solutions, particularly in cancer, infectious diseases, public health, microbiome and mental health.

Addressing the institute's 4th Annual Research Day, Executive Director Dr. Ashutosh Biswas said state-of-the-art facilities, including the Infectious Research and Diagnostic Laboratory (IRDL), Advanced Mycology Diagnostic and Research Laboratory, Advanced Molecular Oncology Diagnostic Services (DIAMOnDS) and Brain Bank, are helping expand specialised diagnostic services in the region.

These facilities aim to make advanced diagnosis and treatment accessible to patients from Odisha and neighbouring states, reducing their dependence on distant metropolitan centres for specialised healthcare, he said.

The institute has already received more than Rs 10 crore through 29 research projects in 2026-27 and is currently supported by 24 international, national and regional funding agencies, reflecting its expanding research capabilities and institutional partnerships.

The annual event, organised under the theme "Innovate, Translate, Heal: Advancing Biomedical Frontiers", underscored the importance of converting scientific discoveries into practical healthcare interventions.

Prof. Shreepad Karmalkar, Director of IIT Bhubaneswar, who attended the programme as the chief guest, called for stronger interdisciplinary, multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary research, emphasising closer collaboration between IITs and AIIMS to accelerate healthcare innovation.

Dr. Arvind Sinha, Executive Director of AIIMS Kalyani, stressed the need to generate India-specific healthcare research data, pointing out that the country's distinct population profile and healthcare challenges demand evidence-based solutions rooted in domestic research.

Charudutta Panigrahi, senior technocrat, chairman of Vikash Manthan and advisor to AHPI, highlighted the importance of medical research in nation-building.

A major attraction of the event was a research poster presentation involving 140 participants and a panel discussion on "Breaking Barriers in Medical Research: Hurdles, Innovations and Opportunities".

Moderated by Dr. Biswas, the discussion brought together experts from leading research and medical institutions to deliberate on strengthening India's research ecosystem, promoting institutional collaborations and addressing emerging healthcare challenges.

The panel included Panigrahi, Prof. Debasis Dash, Director of the Institute of Life Sciences, Bhubaneswar, Prof. Ramnath Misra, former Dean of SGPGIMS, and Prof .Arvind Sinha of AIIMS Kalyani.

The dignitaries also released the Annual Research Report 2025-26 and digitally launched AIIMS Bhubaneswar Research Talks. Awards recognising outstanding research and publications, best posters across participant categories and global research achievements were also presented.

The event was attended by Dean (Research) Dr. Baijayantimala Mishra, Dean (Examination) Dr. Manaswini Mangaraj and Associate Dean (Research) Dr. Gaurav Chhabra, among others.
