Steel India (AM/NS India) has strengthened its position in advanced steel
manufacturing by securing Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) licences under two
newly introduced standards, enabling the company to expand domestic supplies of
specialised steel products for infrastructure, defence and industrial
applications.
AM/NS India has
become the first steel manufacturer in India to receive the All India First BIS
Licence for IS 2062 (Part 2):2026, the newly introduced standard covering
hot-rolled quenched and tempered (Q&T) steel plates, sheets, strips and
wide flats.
The company has also
secured a BIS licence under IS 19210:2025 for pre-painted
zinc-aluminium-magnesium (Zn-Al-Mg) alloy coated steel strip and sheet, marking
another milestone in bringing advanced corrosion-resistant steel solutions to
the Indian market.
The certifications
are significant from a procurement perspective as BIS certification is a
mandatory prerequisite for supplying steel to several state-funded infrastructure,
defence and public-sector projects. The new licences will enable AM/NS India to
supply certified grades for projects where such standards are mandated,
supporting the government's Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives.
As the first domestic
licensee under IS 2062 (Part 2):2026, AM/NS India will also provide an
indigenous source of Q&T steel plates for specialised applications that
have traditionally depended, in part, on imported material.
The newly certified
products are manufactured at AM/NS India's advanced facilities in Hazira and
Pune and expand the company's portfolio across high-load structural
applications and corrosion-resistant coated steel products.
Q&T steel plates
are produced through a specialised heat-treatment process that imparts high
strength and durability. The material can enable lighter yet stronger
structures capable of carrying higher loads and is used in bridges, heavy
engineering equipment, mining machinery, offshore structures, marine
applications and other demanding industrial environments.
The IS 19210:2025
standard, meanwhile, establishes a quality framework for pre-painted Zn-Al-Mg
alloy coated steel products. AM/NS India's offering in this segment is based on
Optigal®, ArcelorMittal's zinc-aluminium-magnesium coated steel technology.
Compared with
conventional colour-coated steel products, Zn-Al-Mg coatings offer enhanced
corrosion resistance, improved protection at cut edges, longer service life and
lower maintenance requirements. Such products find applications in roofing and
cladding, pre-engineered buildings, infrastructure, warehousing, railways and
industrial construction.
The latest
certifications add to AM/NS India's track record of supplying steel for major
national assets. Its products have contributed to critical projects including
the Chenab Rail Bridge and strategic naval platforms such as INS Surat, INS
Visakhapatnam and the recently commissioned INS Malvan.
With the latest
additions, AM/NS India now holds 25 BIS licences, including three All India
First Licences under IS 3039, IS 18809:2024 and IS 2062 (Part 2):2026.
The company said the
certifications reflect its continued focus on developing specialised steel
solutions aligned with evolving industrial requirements and strengthening the
domestic availability of globally benchmarked steel products.
