Reinforcing its
commitment to technological innovation and the advancement of India’s
automotive sector, ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India) on Wednesday
launched Zagnelis Protect, a premium Zinc–Aluminium–Magnesium coated steel
brand engineered for high-performance automotive applications. Backed by
ArcelorMittal’s globally proven and patented coating technology, the product
introduces a first-of-its-kind manufacturing capability in India, strengthening
domestic availability of advanced automotive steel solutions and reducing
dependence on imports.
The initial
application of Zagnelis® Protect will be in motor cups — critical enclosures
for direct-current motors used in windows, mirrors, wipers, and seats. With
every passenger vehicle typically incorporating 20–30 such motors, the product
is expected to deliver immediate benefits through enhanced durability and
performance. While the launch is initially focused on motor cups, Zagnelis
Protect has been designed for a wide range of automotive applications,
including chassis components, door inner panels, hood/bonnet inner panels, and
decklid/tailgate inner panels.
Globally recognised
for offering significantly higher corrosion resistance than conventional galvanised
(GI) coatings, Zagnelis Protect combines exceptional corrosion protection with
self-healing properties, superior drawability, and reliable weldability. The
localisation of this advanced coated steel will improve supply chain
efficiency, ensure greater quality consistency, and help automotive
manufacturers enhance operational performance and competitiveness.
India, the world’s third-largest automobile producer, continues to rely on imports for an estimated 8–10 per cent of critical automotive steel grades due to coating and metallurgical complexities. The domestic production of advanced coated steels such as Zagnelis Protect is expected to play a pivotal role in supporting the next phase of growth and innovation in the country’s automotive manufacturing ecosystem.
