The Ministry of Coal has achieved a landmark breakthrough in FY 2025–26, as production and dispatch from captive and commercial coal mines crossed the 200 Million Tonnes (MT) milestone for the first time, underscoring a significant expansion in India’s domestic energy capability. The sector recorded a combined coal production of 210.46 MT as of March 31, 2026, registering a strong year-on-year growth of 10.22 percent compared to 190.95 MT in the previous fiscal. Dispatch volumes also rose impressively to 204.61 MT, reflecting a 7.35 percent increase over 190.42 MT in FY 2024–25, highlighting improved operational efficiency and strengthened supply chain logistics.

The achievement marks a decisive leap forward for India’s coal ecosystem, supported by proactive policy reforms, faster regulatory clearances, and enhanced coordination among stakeholders. During the financial year, 12 captive and commercial coal blocks were operationalized through the grant of Mine Opening Permission, collectively adding over 86 MT of annual production capacity and significantly expanding the operational base. Notably, seven coal blocks commenced production within the same fiscal year, demonstrating accelerated project execution and a more responsive regulatory environment.

The consistent rise in dispatch volumes signals improved evacuation infrastructure, optimized logistics networks, and a more resilient coal supply chain capable of meeting the country’s growing energy requirements. This performance reinforces the government’s strategic push towards strengthening domestic resource security, reducing dependence on imports, and supporting the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat.

The record-breaking performance of FY 2025–26 highlights the coal sector’s pivotal contribution to India’s industrial growth trajectory and its critical role in powering economic expansion. With a sustained focus on scalability, efficiency, and responsible mining practices, the sector continues to advance the broader vision of Viksit Bharat 2047, ensuring a robust, secure, and future-ready energy framework for the nation.
