India’s electric vehicle (EV) revolution gathered unprecedented momentum in July, with retail sales surging to an all-time monthly high of 3,27,901 units, underscoring the rapid mainstream adoption of clean mobility across segments. Riding on robust consumer demand, expanding model choices and accelerating electrification across urban and rural markets, EV retail sales jumped 66 per cent year-on-year, while electric vehicles accounted for nearly one in every eight vehicles sold in the country, marking a significant milestone in India’s transition towards sustainable transportation.

The July performance eclipsed the previous monthly record of 3,06,220 EV retail sales achieved in June this year, when the sector had registered a 63 per cent year-on-year growth and crossed the 12 per cent penetration mark for the first time, according to data released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) on Friday.

The record-breaking growth was driven primarily by the electric two-wheeler segment, which crossed the 2-lakh sales milestone for the first time. Retail sales of electric two-wheelers rose 88.32% year-on-year to 2,04,362 units in July from 1,08,516 units in the corresponding month last year, reflecting growing consumer acceptance amid improving charging infrastructure and a wider range of affordable offerings.

Electric passenger vehicles also registered robust growth, with retail sales climbing 83.13 per cent to 32,928 units last month compared with 17,981 units in July 2025. The three-wheeler electric segment continued to strengthen its dominance, recording retail sales of 87,055 units against 69,477 units a year ago, a growth of 25.3%.

The electric commercial vehicle segment emerged as the fastest-growing category during the month, with retail sales soaring 168.6 per cent to 3,556 units from 1,324 units in July last year, signalling rising fleet electrification by logistics and commercial operators.

Commenting on the performance, FADA Vice President Sai Giridhar said, “India has never bought more electric vehicles in a month than it did in July 26 — 3,27,901 units, up over 66 per cent year-on-year, with nearly one in eight vehicles retailed now electric.”

Highlighting the broad-based nature of the growth, he said every vehicle category had contributed to the record performance. “Two-wheelers crossed the 2-lakh mark for the first time, at a record 11.2 per cent share. Three-wheelers, at 65.1 per cent, have made electric the default, not the alternative,” Giridhar said.

He further noted that electric commercial vehicles nearly tripled during the month to attain a record 3.57 per cent market share, indicating that fleet electrification has progressed beyond pilot projects to large-scale purchase orders.

While electric passenger vehicles expanded 83% over the previous year, Giridhar observed that the segment’s growth was constrained by supply shortages of high-demand models. He urged manufacturers to address production bottlenecks ahead of the upcoming festive season to fully capitalise on strong consumer demand.

“The EV transition has stopped being a forecast. It is now a showroom reality, and Bharat is driving it,” Giridhar said, encapsulating the sector’s accelerating shift from policy-led adoption to mass-market acceptance.
