ROURKELA, MAY 21, 2026

The compensation packages offered by Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) to families being shifted from the Steel Plant’s land for its expansion have ushered in fresh hope and renewed aspirations among the beneficiaries. Till date, Rourkela Steel Plant has provided Rs. 2.92 crore to 71 families, while 29 persons have secured contractual jobs at the Steel Plant.

Anju Dung Dung, a resident of Kate Basti, is one such beneficiary whose life has undergone a remarkable transformation because of the package. After completing her intermediate studies and an ANM course, Anju was surviving on a monthly wage of just Rs. 4,000 as an assistant at a nearby beauty salon. She was living in a hutment without legal ownership documents for the land. Today, her family has received a financial compensation package and she has joined a contractual job at RSP with a starting salary of Rs. 22,500 along with all statutory benefits. Her family is also now eligible for medical facilities. With a steady income and renewed confidence, Anju now dreams of building her own house on the land provided by RSP and leading a more dignified and secure life.

Anju’s story reflects the experience of many families rehabilitated by RSP. Alok Xaxa, an under-matric youth who earlier survived on irregular small jobs that barely met daily expenses, has also found stability through the initiative. Now employed with a secure salary and workplace benefits, Alok plans to build a pucca house on land allotted under the compensation package. He says that once the basic needs of roti, kapda aur makaan are fulfilled, people can begin aspiring for greater goals. He and his family are now looking ahead to a brighter future.

Housewife Anita, who had no prior formal work experience, is another beneficiary who found livelihood through agency employment at the plant. Her eyes light up as she speaks about enrolling her children in good schools with her regular salary — a mother’s dream that once seemed beyond reach. For many beneficiaries, access to a stable income has transformed not only their economic condition but also their outlook towards life and future priorities.

The same optimism and renewed energy resonate in the stories of Asis Minz, Priyanka Minz, Veronica Lakra, Sameer Lakra and many others whose lives have improved significantly through the rehabilitation programme.

RSP has also provided transit shelters equipped with essential utilities to ease the transition for families awaiting permanent accommodation. Plots earmarked for affected hutments are being readied to welcome the families, enabling the construction of permanent homes and rebuilding of communities.

Through its comprehensive compensation and rehabilitation package, Rourkela Steel Plant is steadily transforming the lives of hutment dwellers from uncertainty and instability to security, dignity and hope for a better future.
