The growing role of genomic medicine in cancer care, rare disease diagnosis and personalised treatment came under the spotlight at a scientific meeting in Bhubaneswar, with medical experts underscoring the need to make advanced molecular diagnostics more accessible to patients in Odisha. The scientific evening on “Advances in Genomic Medicine”, organised by 3D Genomix Healthcare, brought together senior oncologists, hematologists, pathologists, academicians and healthcare professionals to discuss developments in genomic testing and its integration into clinical practice.

The initiative comes at a time when advances in molecular diagnostics are increasingly enabling doctors to obtain detailed information about the genetic and molecular characteristics of diseases, potentially supporting more individualised approaches to diagnosis, treatment and monitoring.

3D Genomix Healthcare was founded by Dr Aditya Samal, Dr Nityanada Upadhyay, Dr Arun Mohanty and Sribatsha Rath with the objective of improving access to advanced molecular diagnostics and genomic medicine in Odisha and across Eastern India.

In his welcome address, Dr Arun Mohanty, CEO of 3D Genomix Healthcare, outlined the organisation’s vision and highlighted its key areas of work, including rare genetic disorder evaluation, personalised oncogenomics, non-invasive cancer monitoring, chimerism monitoring, pharmacogenomics and metagenomic diagnostics for infectious diseases.

For Odisha, one of the key objectives is to strengthen access to specialised genomic testing within the state and reduce dependence on laboratories located outside the region. The organisation plans to combine genomic technologies, bioinformatics, AI-assisted interpretation and expert review to provide clinicians with clinically relevant molecular information.

Such information can be used, where appropriate, to support earlier diagnostic evaluation, personalised treatment decisions, disease monitoring and family-based genetic assessment.

The scientific programme was moderated by Dr Chinmaya Pani, Medical Oncologist, Utkal Hospital, and featured experts from leading institutions in India and the United States.

Dr Rajyalakshmi Luthra, Professor and Director, Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory, The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, delivered the first session on “Current Landscape of Genomic Testing in Patients with Solid Tumors”.

The session focused on the evolving role of genomic testing in solid tumours and the importance of molecular information in contemporary cancer care.

The second scientific session was delivered by Dr Sunil Jaiman, Assistant Professor, Department of Pathology, Wayne State University School of Medicine, Detroit. He spoke on “Perinatal Pathology in the Genomic Era”, highlighting the intersection of genomic advances and perinatal pathology.

The presentations were followed by an interactive discussion involving the speakers, senior medical professionals and the audience. The deliberations focused on the practical aspects of integrating genomic testing into clinical care in Odisha and the challenges and opportunities associated with the adoption of advanced molecular diagnostics.

The meeting also brought together senior professionals from leading medical institutions in the State, providing a platform for clinicians to exchange views on the emerging applications of genomic medicine across different specialties.

With genomic technologies evolving rapidly, the discussions highlighted the importance of closer collaboration between clinicians, molecular diagnostic specialists, pathologists and genomic medicine experts to translate advances in laboratory science into meaningful clinical applications.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr Sanjib Kumar Mishra, Director and Senior Consultant, Radiation Oncology, Utkal Hospital, Bhubaneswar.

The event was co-sponsored by Shanti Charitable Trust, Chennai.
