NEW DELHI, OCTOBER 1, 2026

India’s gross Goods and Services Tax (GST) collections rose 14.7 per cent year-on-year to Rs 2,03,521 crore in September 2026, buoyed by a broad-based increase in domestic tax receipts and a sharp rise in GST collected on imports, according to provisional government data released on Thursday.

The September collections, which stood at Rs 1,77,365 crore in the year-ago period, underline sustained momentum in tax revenues during the first half of the financial year. After accounting for refunds, net GST revenue increased 18.1 per cent to Rs 1,76,520 crore from Rs 1,49,517 crore in September 2025.

Domestic GST revenue rose 10.1 per cent to Rs 1,37,996 crore during the month, compared with Rs 1,25,334 crore a year earlier. Within this, Central GST (CGST) collections increased to Rs 37,762 crore from Rs 33,645 crore, while State GST (SGST) revenue rose to Rs 45,363 crore from Rs 41,836 crore. Integrated GST (IGST) collections on domestic transactions climbed to Rs 54,871 crore from Rs 49,853 crore.

The sharper growth came from GST collected on imports, which surged 25.9 per cent year-on-year to Rs 65,525 crore in September from Rs 52,031 crore a year earlier.

The increase in gross collections came despite a modest decline in total refunds. GST refunds fell 3 per cent to Rs 27,001 crore in September from Rs 27,848 crore in the corresponding month last year. Domestic refunds declined 13.5 per cent to Rs 13,504 crore, while refunds related to exports through ICEGATE increased 10.2 per cent to Rs 13,497 crore.

As a result, net domestic GST revenue rose 13.5 per cent to Rs 1,24,491 crore, while net customs GST revenue jumped 30.8 per cent to Rs 52,028 crore.

The latest numbers take the gross GST collections for the first six months of 2026-27 to Rs 12,46,278 crore, an 11.6 per cent increase over Rs 11,17,088 crore collected during the corresponding period of 2025-26. Net GST revenue during April-September rose 10.4% to Rs 10,66,116 crore from Rs 9,65,455 crore a year earlier.

The buoyancy in September collections was also reflected in state revenues. Post-settlement SGST revenue of states and Union Territories rose 14% year-on-year to Rs 92,075 crore from Rs 80,962 crore in September 2025.

The September data comes against the backdrop of continued expansion in both domestic tax collections and import-linked GST receipts, keeping the overall revenue trajectory firmly in positive territory during the first half of 2026-27.
