The government's efforts to unlock the value of surplus public sector
assets have gained momentum, with an inter-ministerial group recommending asset
monetisation proposals worth over Rs 1,100 crore for consideration and approval
by a Cabinet-delegated Alternative Mechanism (AM).
The proposals primarily involve surplus land and building assets of
Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs) identified for monetisation, marking
a significant step towards putting underutilised government-owned properties to
productive use.
The recommendations were made by the Inter-Ministerial Group (IMG),
chaired by the Secretary, Department of Public Enterprises (DPE), and
co-chaired by the Secretary, Department of Telecommunications (DoT).
The proposals will now be placed before the Alternative Mechanism for
consideration and approval. Further monetisation activities will be undertaken
in accordance with the prescribed procedures following the requisite
clearances.
The move is part of the government's broader strategy to unlock the
economic potential of surplus and non-core public assets through systematic
assessment, professional transaction preparation and transparent, competitive
price discovery.
The National Land Monetisation Corporation (NLMC), the government's
specialised institution for monetising surplus land and other non-core assets,
plays a key role in facilitating the process.
It works closely with the concerned ministries, departments and asset-owning entities to undertake asset assessment, due diligence, valuation, transaction structuring and market-oriented monetisation initiatives.
The latest recommendations underscore the government's continued push for efficient public asset management and value-maximising monetisation, aimed at improving asset utilisation, mobilising resources and supporting investment-led economic development.
