The government on
Wednesday reviewed the use of steel recovered from ship recycling, with a focus
on expanding its applications across sectors, boosting value generation and
strengthening India’s position as the world’s leading ship recycling hub.
A joint meeting was
held under the chairmanship of Steel and Heavy Industries Minister H D
Kumaraswamy and Ports, Shipping and Waterways Minister Sarbananda Sonowal to
discuss and review the usage of steel obtained through ship recycling.
Key stakeholders,
including the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Bureau of Indian
Standards (BIS), Gujarat Maritime Board (GMB) and Ship Recycling Industries
Association (SRIA), participated in the meeting.
The discussions
examined the existing regulatory framework governing secondary steel obtained
from ship recycling and explored avenues for expanding its use in additional
sectors.
The move is aimed at
enhancing value generation from ship recycling while creating wider
opportunities for the utilisation of recycled steel in the domestic economy. It
also seeks to support the growth of India's steel manufacturing ecosystem and
reinforce the country's leadership in the global ship recycling industry.
The meeting underscored the government's commitment to promoting circular economy practices by encouraging greater resource efficiency and productive reuse of materials recovered from end-of-life ships.
The initiative is also expected to support domestic steel manufacturing while ensuring that India's ship recycling industry continues to set global benchmarks in sustainability and operational efficiency.
