State-run aerospace and defence major Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has strengthened its position in the global civil aviation supply chain by signing a long-term agreement with Safran Aircraft Engines for the production and supply of high-performance turbine ring forgings for the globally successful CFM LEAP engine programme.

The multi-year contract, signed at the Farnborough International Airshow, marks a significant milestone in the decades-long partnership between HAL and the French aerospace engine manufacturer, underscoring growing international confidence in India's advanced aerospace manufacturing capabilities.

The agreement was signed by Praveen B, General Manager, Foundry and Forge Division, HAL, and Dominique Dupuy, Senior Vice President (Purchasing), Safran Aircraft Engines, in the presence of Ravi K, Chairman and Managing Director, HAL, and Jayakrishnan S, CEO, HAL's Bengaluru Complex.

Under the pact, HAL will manufacture near-net shape turbine ring forgings made from superalloys at its state-of-the-art Ring Rolling facility in Bengaluru. These precision-engineered components are used in the high-temperature rotating section of the LEAP aero-engine and are considered critical for engine performance, efficiency and reliability.

Describing the agreement as a major step forward, HAL CMD Ravi K said the contract reflects the growing trust of global aerospace original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) in HAL's technological expertise and manufacturing excellence.

"HAL and Safran share a longstanding and trusted partnership that has evolved over several decades. By contributing to the LEAP engine programme, we are expanding our footprint in the international civil aerospace market while demonstrating our capability to manufacture complex aero-engine components to global standards," he said.

He added that the collaboration would not only create a significant business opportunity for HAL but also accelerate the development of advanced manufacturing technologies and capabilities required for future aero-engine programmes in India.

Echoing the sentiment, Safran Aircraft Engines Senior Vice President Dominique Dupuy said the company was pleased to deepen its collaboration with HAL.

"This cooperation is fully aligned with our strategy to develop a locally integrated supply chain as we ramp up LEAP engine production to meet the growing global demand," Dupuy said.

The agreement is expected to further strengthen India's role in the global aerospace value chain while supporting the country's ambition of becoming a leading manufacturing hub for high-end aviation components.
