Jindal Stainless Limited (JSL) is expected to firm up the
site for its proposed Rs 40,000-crore stainless steel manufacturing project in
Maharashtra over the next one to two quarters, as the country’s largest
stainless steel producer advances plans to significantly expand its domestic
capacity.
“It is taking a bit of
time, but...we are progressing in that direction,” Jindal Stainless CEO Tarun
Khulbe said, responding to a query on land acquisition for the proposed
facility.
The company is currently evaluating several land options in
Maharashtra and expects greater clarity on the location within the next one or
two quarters, after which it will unveil detailed plans for the project, Khulbe
said.
The proposed integrated stainless steel facility is planned
with a total capacity of 4 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) and will be
developed in phases. The first phase is expected to be operational within the
next four years.
The Maharashtra project is also expected to strengthen Jindal
Stainless’ presence in high-value and strategic segments. The facility will
manufacture specialised grades of stainless steel for emerging and critical
applications spanning hydrogen, nuclear energy, defence, mobility,
infrastructure and process industries.
The Maharashtra government has committed to supporting the
investment by expediting necessary permissions, registrations, approvals and
clearances, besides facilitating fiscal incentives through the relevant state
departments.
The project marks a major capacity expansion for Jindal Stainless, which currently has a combined manufacturing capacity of 3 MTPA at its plants in Hisar, Haryana, and Jajpur, Odisha.
Once the Maharashtra facility is fully operational, Jindal Stainless’ total manufacturing capacity in India is expected to rise to 7 MTPA, positioning the company for a substantially larger role in meeting the country’s growing demand for stainless steel across infrastructure, mobility, energy and other strategic sectors.
