Mumbai Indians on
Saturday elevated former West Indies all-rounder Kieron Pollard to the position
of head coach, marking a new chapter in his 16-year association with the
five-time Indian Premier League champions.
Pollard, who joined
the franchise as a 22-year-old player, has been an integral part of Mumbai
Indians' success over the years and most recently served as the team's batting
coach. His elevation reflects the franchise's faith in his experience, tactical
acumen and deep understanding of its culture and competitive ethos.
A defining figure in
Mumbai Indians' rise as one of the most successful teams in franchise cricket,
Pollard will now be entrusted with leading the side into its next phase, with
an emphasis on nurturing talent, strengthening team culture and building on its
winning legacy.
"Pollard joined
Mumbai Indians as a young 22-year-old and, over the past sixteen years, has
become an integral part of our family. As a player, he gave us many unforgettable
moments, and as a coach, he has continued to share his experience, passion and
deep understanding of the game," Mumbai Indians co-owner Nita M. Ambani
said in a statement.
"We are
delighted to see him take on this new responsibility as head coach. Polly knows
what it means to wear the MI jersey and what it takes to play for the Paltan. I
am confident that he will bring the same commitment, belief and determination
to this role," she added.
Pollard's appointment
comes at a time when T20 cricket continues to evolve rapidly, with teams
increasingly relying on tactical flexibility, data-driven decisions and the
ability to adapt to changing match situations. His experience across leagues
and his familiarity with Mumbai Indians' players and working environment are
expected to be valuable assets in the new role.
The former West
Indies international said taking charge of the franchise was an honour and
acknowledged the trust placed in him by the management.
"It is an honour
to take on the role of head coach of Mumbai Indians. MI has been a huge part of
my life and career, and the bond I share with this team, the players and the
Paltan means a great deal to me," Pollard said.
"Having
experienced this journey as a player and then as a coach, I understand what Mumbai
Indians stands for and the responsibility that comes with representing the Blue
and Gold. I am grateful to Mrs Nita Ambani, Akash Ambani and the entire MI
family for their trust in me," he added.
Pollard also
expressed his desire to work closely with the players and support staff to
sustain the franchise's success while helping emerging talent realise its
potential.
"I look forward
to working closely with the players and support staff, building on the team's
legacy, helping our talent grow and giving the Paltan many more reasons to
celebrate," he said.
Pollard's elevation
underlines Mumbai Indians' preference for continuity and leadership drawn from
within its established system. Having experienced the demands of the franchise
as both a player and a batting coach, he brings an understanding of the
expectations associated with one of the most high-profile teams in the IPL.
Owned by Reliance
Industries Limited through its subsidiary Indiawin Sports Private Limited,
Mumbai Indians have built a formidable record across men's and women's
franchise cricket.
The wider MI family spans seven teams across five countries and four continents and has accumulated 13 championship titles across global T20 competitions, including five IPL trophies, two Champions League T20 titles, two Women's Premier League crowns, two Major League Cricket titles with MI New York, and one each in the ILT20 with MI Emirates and the SA20 with MI Cape Town.
The men's and women's teams competing in The Hundred under the MI London identity have also collectively won five titles, further extending the franchise's international footprint.
