Marking a significant strategic expansion beyond its core commodities business, the National Commodity & Derivatives Exchange (NCDEX) on Tuesday launched NCDEX Nidhi, a dedicated mutual fund transaction platform aimed at boosting mutual fund penetration across rural and semi-urban India. The initiative represents the exchange's first major step into the equity ecosystem as it seeks to transform itself into a multi-segment exchange.

The platform debuted with six leading asset management companies (AMCs) on board—Nippon India Mutual Fund, HDFC Mutual Fund, Axis Mutual Fund, LIC Mutual Fund, Tata Mutual Fund and Invesco Mutual Fund. NCDEX expects nearly 20 additional AMCs to join the platform by the end of August, significantly expanding the range of investment options available to investors.

Launching the platform, Arun Raste, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of NCDEX, said the initiative aligns with the exchange's long-standing mission of connecting underserved communities with formal financial markets. He noted that NCDEX's extensive rural outreach, built over more than two decades, would now serve as a gateway for millions of first-time investors outside India's top 30 cities to participate in wealth creation through mutual funds.

NCDEX said the platform has been designed to deepen mutual fund distribution beyond the country's top 100 cities by leveraging its extensive agricultural ecosystem and network of Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs). The exchange believes this approach will help integrate first-time investors from rural and semi-urban regions into the formal financial system, where access to investment products has traditionally remained limited.

Tojo Banerjee, Chief of Equity Business at NCDEX, said mutual fund penetration in rural and semi-urban India remains significantly below its potential, primarily due to inadequate distribution channels rather than a lack of investor interest. He said NCDEX Nidhi addresses this challenge by providing a simple, compliant and API-enabled platform that caters to distributors, Registered Investment Advisers (RIAs), AMCs and retail investors alike.

As part of its rural outreach strategy, NCDEX has already trained members from 20 Farmer Producer Organisations as certified mutual fund distributors after helping them qualify the mandatory National Institute of Securities Markets (NISM) examination. These newly certified distributors are expected to play a pivotal role in expanding access to mutual fund investments in villages, where conventional distribution networks remain sparse despite rising household savings.

The exchange said NCDEX Nidhi incorporates several investor-friendly features designed to simplify transactions and improve transparency. These include UPI AutoPay for Systematic Investment Plans (SIPs), detailed rejection messages instead of generic error codes, end-to-end transaction time-stamping until Net Asset Value (NAV) allocation, and the flexibility for investors to select any calendar date for SIP deductions. According to the exchange, these features are expected to reduce operational disputes while delivering a smoother investment experience.

The platform has been named NCDEX Nidhi, with "Nidhi" symbolising wealth creation and representing the beginning of an investor's long-term financial journey.
