On the sacred
occasion of Ram Navami, a remarkable story of devotion and craftsmanship comes
to the fore through a drape that beautifully blends spirituality with cultural
legacy. When Nita M. Ambani received her Honorary Doctorate at Kalinga
Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT), she chose to honour the rich weaving
traditions of Odisha by adorning an exquisite Ikat saree created within the state itself, reflecting a heartfelt
tribute to local artisanship and heritage.
Crafted by master
weaver Harishankar Meher, the saree is a testament to patience and precision,
taking nearly two years to complete. Designed in earthy hues, the drape
showcases the intricate bandha technique and the use of natural dyes,
reinforcing the authenticity of Odisha’s celebrated ikat tradition. The saree’s
body features a Ram Shila-inspired mosaic with “Ram” inscribed across multiple
languages, symbolising the universality of faith and devotion that transcends
boundaries.
The pallu is adorned with sacred mantras
rendered in Odia script, seamlessly interwoven into classic ikat patterns,
reflecting the harmonious blend of spiritual symbolism and artistic excellence.
The textile goes beyond being an attire; it narrates a story of devotion,
heritage, and cultural continuity, highlighting how traditional craftsmanship
can embody profound meaning.
More than a
ceremonial garment, the saree stands as a celebration of tradition,
spirituality, and storytelling — demonstrating how textiles can preserve the
essence of faith, culture, and timeless wisdom while promoting the legacy of
indigenous artisans.
