Patriotism, national pride and a renewed commitment to powering India’s growth resonated at NTPC Northern Region Headquarters (NRHQ), Lucknow, as the organisation celebrated the 80th Independence Day with fervour and enthusiasm. The occasion not only paid homage to the freedom fighters whose sacrifices secured the nation’s independence, but also showcased NTPC’s remarkable journey as a cornerstone of India’s energy security and its resolve to build a greener, stronger and more self-reliant India.

S. N. Panigrahi, Executive Director (Northern & Southern Region), unfurled the National Flag and paid heartfelt tribute to the martyrs who made the supreme sacrifice for the country. In accordance with protocol, the National Song and National Anthem were sung at the beginning as well as during the closing ceremony, adding solemnity and patriotic spirit to the celebrations.

Addressing the gathering, Panigrahi reflected on NTPC’s five-decade-long journey and its significant contribution to the nation’s development. He highlighted that NTPC currently accounts for around 24 per cent of India’s total power generation, with the NTPC Group having crossed an installed capacity of 91 GW (91,080 MW). The Northern Region alone contributes 25,967 MW to this formidable portfolio. He further noted that while NTPC achieved an overall Plant Load Factor (PLF) of 76 per cent, the Northern Region registered an impressive 77 per cent PLF across its thermal, hydro and renewable energy assets.

Emphasising the organisation’s forward-looking approach, Panigrahi said NTPC remains firmly committed to sustainable and responsible growth, with an ambitious target of reaching 149 GW of installed capacity by 2032, including 60 GW from non-fossil sources. During FY 2025–26, NTPC added approximately 5,488 MW of renewable capacity, reinforcing its commitment to accelerating India’s clean-energy transition.

The Northern Region’s operational performance further underscored its pivotal role in the country’s power landscape. As on August 13, 2026, the region recorded 44,310 MU of generation, contributing 25.41 per cent of NTPC Group generation and 5.73 per cent of the All-India generation. Demonstrating outstanding operational efficiency, Rihand, Singrauli and Vindhyachal stations secured the first, third and eighth positions respectively in NTPC Group PLF rankings, recording PLFs of 84.92 per cent, 82.88 per cent and 78.89 per cent.

The region also continued to make significant strides in environmental stewardship, with stations at Unchahar, Jhajjar, Tanda, Meja and Dadri achieving more than 90 per cent ash utilisation. Major capacity expansion initiatives are progressing in the region, including the 1,600 MW Singrauli Stage-III and the 2,400 MW Meja Stage-II projects in Uttar Pradesh, further strengthening the region’s contribution to India’s growing energy requirements.

Reaffirming NTPC’s commitment to a “Zero Harm” workplace and environmental sustainability, Shri Panigrahi highlighted the organisation’s extensive plantation initiatives. More than 3.69 lakh saplings were planted during FY 2025–26, while another 2.18 lakh saplings have already been planted so far in FY 2026–27. He also underlined the Northern Region’s continued focus on Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives covering healthcare, rural development, environmental sustainability and the Girl Empowerment Mission (GEM), reflecting NTPC’s broader commitment to inclusive and sustainable community development.

Adding further colour to the celebrations, Medha Pratiyogita and Swachhta Pakhwada competition awards were presented to employees and their family members in recognition of their participation and achievements. The programme culminated in the release of tricolour balloons, creating a stirring visual symbol of national pride, unity and the enduring spirit of independence.

HODs, senior officials, employees, members of Uttara Club, family members, children and associates participated in large numbers, making the celebration a vibrant expression of collective patriotism.
