In a major achievement that underscores its commitment to innovation and workplace safety, NTPC Limited has been granted a patent by the Government of India for its groundbreaking invention titled “A Method and a System for Accessing Electrical Breaker Modules.” The patent, granted on June 15, 2026, under Patent No. 592308, introduces an advanced smart access control system for electrical breakers in switchgear installations, seamlessly integrated with SAP and Permit-to-Work (PTW) systems to create a robust and intelligent safety framework for electrical maintenance operations.

The innovative technology was developed by NTPC engineers Sandeep Kumar, DGM, CC (Solar); Gnyanankur Sonowal, DGM (EMD), NTPC Bongaigaon; and Ashutosh Kumar, Senior Manager (Operation), Farakka. The system utilizes multi-factor authentication and digital interlocking mechanisms to ensure that only authorized personnel can access designated breaker modules.

Designed to enhance safety and operational reliability, the solution effectively prevents operational multiplicity and duplicity, enforces protection interlocks, and eliminates the risk of inadvertently isolating incorrect electrical equipment during maintenance activities. By integrating digital technologies with data-driven controls, the system significantly reduces the scope for human error while ensuring strict adherence to established maintenance protocols.

The successful development and patenting of this technology highlight NTPC’s strong focus on fostering innovation that directly contributes to safer, smarter, and more reliable power plant operations. The patent also reflects the company’s continuous pursuit of technological excellence and indigenous innovation, further reinforcing its position as a leading integrated power utility committed to operational excellence, digital transformation, and the highest standards of workplace safety.

As India’s largest integrated power utility, NTPC continues to drive innovation across its operations by developing advanced solutions that enhance reliability, efficiency, sustainability, and safety, while contributing significantly to the nation’s energy security.
