Odisha has crossed a significant milestone in its rooftop solar journey, with the number of installations under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana crossing the two-lakh mark in the first week of September. The State had recorded 2,01,621 installations as of September 7, 2026, according to the National Portal for Rooftop Solar.

The latest figure places Odisha among the country’s major rooftop-solar markets, with the State retaining its No. 7 position in the national ranking, the same position it held last month.

Odisha has so far received 3,35,140 applications under the scheme, of which more than two lakh have translated into completed installations. The installed rooftop solar capacity has reached 466.64 MW, while subsidy released to beneficiaries has touched ₹891.83 crore.

The two-lakh milestone comes at a time when rooftop solar adoption is accelerating across the country. India had recorded 46,76,903 installations against 81,11,097 applications by September 7, with cumulative installed capacity reaching 16,472.74 MW. Subsidy released nationally stood at ₹30,885.58 crore.

Odisha’s achievement, however, comes against an increasingly competitive national backdrop. Gujarat continues to lead the country with 8,31,393 installations, followed by Uttar Pradesh with 8,07,490 and Maharashtra with 7,80,573.

Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Rajasthan occupy the next three positions, with 3,66,664, 3,40,131 and 3,13,982 installations, respectively. Odisha, with 2,01,621 installations, remains ahead of Madhya Pradesh at 1,75,708.

While Odisha’s current No. 7 rank is unchanged, the more significant development is the crossing of the two-lakh installation threshold, signalling the expanding penetration of rooftop solar among electricity consumers in the State.

The installation drive has been led by TP Central Odisha Distribution Ltd (TPCODL), which accounts for the largest number of installations among Odisha’s four discoms.

TPCODL has recorded 65,621 installations against 1,10,285 applications, with installed rooftop capacity of 162.82 MW. Subsidy released through the discom stands at ₹315.47 crore.

TP Western Odisha Distribution Ltd (TPWODL) follows with 55,354 installations from 84,386 applications. Its installed capacity stands at 135 MW, with subsidy releases of ₹258.81 crore.

TP Northern Odisha Distribution Ltd (TPNODL) has registered 51,711 installations against 82,184 applications. The discom has added 110.77 MW of rooftop capacity, while subsidy released has reached ₹204.86 crore.

TP Southern Odisha Distribution Ltd (TPSODL) has recorded 29,076 installations from 58,429 applications, with installed capacity of 58.18 MW and subsidy releases of ₹113.11 crore.

Together, the three discoms — TPCODL, TPWODL and TPNODL — account for 1,72,686 installations, or over 85 per cent of Odisha’s total installations. Their combined rooftop capacity is about 408.59 MW.

The two-lakh milestone also highlights a broader shift in the economics of Odisha’s electricity sector. Rooftop solar is moving beyond being primarily a subsidy-led household intervention to becoming an important source of distributed generation capacity.

With Odisha already at 466.64 MW of installed capacity under the programme, the next challenge will be to convert the State’s substantial application pipeline into commissioned systems. The gap between 3.35 lakh applications and 2.02 lakh installations represents considerable headroom for further capacity addition.
