Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday underlined the growing strategic depth of India–Germany relations, describing expanding defence and security cooperation as a “testament to mutual trust and shared vision” during a joint press conference with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in New Delhi.

Welcoming Chancellor Merz on his first visit to India and Asia since assuming office, PM Modi said the visit had infused renewed energy and confidence into the long-standing partnership between the two nations. Marking 75 years of diplomatic relations and 25 years of strategic partnership, the Prime Minister noted that India–Germany ties had evolved into a pillar of stability and cooperation with global relevance.

Highlighting robust economic engagement, PM Modi said bilateral trade had crossed the USD 50-billion mark, while more than 2,000 German companies continued to invest in India, reflecting confidence in the country’s growth story. He also announced the establishment of an India–Germany Centre of Excellence to deepen collaboration in renewable energy, climate action and innovation, alongside joint initiatives in green hydrogen and resilient supply chains.

On defence and security, the Prime Minister welcomed Germany’s efforts to simplify defence trade processes and said both sides would work on a roadmap to expand industrial cooperation, opening new avenues for co-development and co-production.

PM Modi also emphasized strong people-to-people ties, announcing closer cooperation in skills, healthcare mobility, education, sports and traditional medicine. He welcomed Germany’s decision to allow visa-free transit for Indian citizens, calling it a significant step toward deepening societal links.

On global issues, the two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to peaceful resolution of conflicts, joint action against terrorism, cooperation in the Indo-Pacific, and reforms of global institutions, including the UN Security Council through the G4 framework.

“The impact of India–Germany friendship is visible not only bilaterally, but on the global stage,” PM Modi said, expressing confidence that Chancellor Merz’s visit would provide fresh momentum and strategic direction to the partnership in the years ahead.
