Behind every high-performing manufacturing system lies an extensive
logistics network that keeps it in seamless motion, enabling the movement of
vast volumes of raw materials and ensuring finished products are delivered on
time with unmatched precision. At Vedanta Aluminium’s Jharsuguda facility — the
world’s largest aluminium plant — logistics has been engineered to sustain
production at a mega scale through a robust system designed to support
continuous, high-volume operations.
Each year, nearly 28 million tonnes of material, including critical raw
inputs such as coal, alumina and CP-coke, along with finished products like
ingots, billets, wire rods and slabs, besides by-products such as fly ash, move
through a tightly integrated logistics ecosystem that forms the backbone of the
plant’s operations.
Railways constitute the core of this vast logistics architecture. Around
55 per cent of all incoming and outgoing material is transported by rail,
making it the most efficient and dependable mode for large-scale industrial
logistics. The rail-led network ensures uninterrupted material flow, faster
turnaround times, and significantly lower emissions per tonne, thereby
reinforcing both operational efficiency and sustainability goals.
In FY26 alone, Vedanta Aluminium’s Jharsuguda plant handled more than
5,000 railway rakes, with close to 500 rakes managed in a single month during
peak operational periods. Such scale is supported by a logistics ecosystem
meticulously designed for continuity and reliability. The plant remains
connected to major railway divisions and zones including Sambalpur/ECoR,
Chakradharpur/SER, Bilaspur/SECR, and multiple other networks of Indian
Railways across the country, making Vedanta Aluminium the largest freight
customer of Indian Railways in eastern India.
The integrated network includes two dedicated railway sidings, in-house
locomotives, a dedicated loco and wagon maintenance shed, CC-examination
facilities, and specialised proprietary rake fleets for transporting alumina
and coal — all functioning in a synchronised system built for high efficiency
and seamless coordination.
Beyond rail connectivity, the company’s logistics capabilities extend
significantly into maritime trade as well. Through strategic operations at
Paradip, Visakhapatnam, Kolkata and JNPT ports across Odisha, Andhra Pradesh,
West Bengal and Maharashtra, Vedanta Aluminium has developed a highly efficient
export channel that enables it to cater to customers in more than 60 countries,
emerging as one of the largest container cargo exporters from these ports.
Collectively, these capabilities represent a deeply integrated logistics
ecosystem that connects production centres with domestic and global markets
through rail, road and sea. The network also contributes substantially to
Odisha’s economy through employment generation, logistics services, transport
infrastructure development, and allied industrial activities across major
transport corridors and port-linked regions.
Speaking about the scale and significance of these operations, C.
Chandru, CEO – Vedanta Aluminium, Jharsuguda, said, “At Vedanta Aluminium, we
are continuously strengthening our logistics and infrastructure capabilities to
support the efficient, reliable, and sustainable movement of materials at
scale. Our integrated, rail-led logistics network plays a critical role in
enhancing operational efficiency, improving turnaround times, and reducing
environmental impact. As one of the world’s leading aluminium producers
supplying to more than 60 countries, building future-ready and sustainable
supply chain systems is central to our ability to consistently serve global
customers while advancing our long-term sustainability goals.”
With aluminium becoming increasingly vital for renewable energy systems,
electric mobility, transportation and advanced manufacturing, Vedanta
Aluminium’s Jharsuguda operations play a pivotal role in ensuring a steady and
large-scale supply of metal to sectors where reliability, consistency and
timely delivery are as critical as production itself. The company’s logistics
strength, therefore, assumes strategic importance in supporting industrial
growth and national economic development.
The company’s emphasis on operational excellence is further reinforced by
its unwavering commitment to safety. During FY26, Vedanta Jharsuguda undertook
several initiatives such as “Suraksha Sampark”, video SOPs and stringent
standard operating procedures in collaboration with major operators, Indian
Railways and domain experts to strengthen awareness and enhance safe practices
in railway operations. These initiatives focused on safe rake movement, closer
inter-team coordination and fostering a safety-first culture across the
logistics network.
At the heart of this sophisticated system are the people who keep it running with clockwork precision. Notably, Vedanta’s all-women locomotive team plays a crucial role in managing in-plant rail movement and ensuring seamless coordination with external logistics operations.
At Jharsuguda, logistics is not merely a support function — it is a strategic capability defined by scale, precision and continuity, enabling Vedanta Aluminium to efficiently power industries that are shaping the future of global growth.
