In a major push towards strengthening India’s strategic
autonomy in advanced defence technologies, Reliance Industries Limited and
British aerospace major Rolls-Royce on Friday announced their strategic intent
to jointly develop, manufacture and deliver a sovereign indigenous combat
engine for the country’s ambitious Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA)
programme.
The proposed partnership brings together Rolls-Royce’s
century-long expertise in advanced propulsion and engine technology with
Reliance’s industrial scale, manufacturing capabilities and execution
strengths, setting the stage for the creation of a homegrown aerospace
propulsion ecosystem capable of supporting India’s next-generation fighter
aircraft programme.
As part of the proposed collaboration, the two companies will
explore the formation of a dedicated Aerospace Gas Turbine Complex in India,
envisaged as a centre of excellence for power and propulsion technology.
The partnership is aimed at offering a compelling proposition
for the joint development of the AMCA engine in India, combining global
technological expertise with domestic industrial capabilities. It also marks a
significant step towards realising the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi
for India’s defence ecosystem to develop and deploy an indigenous engine for
the country’s fighter jet programme.

The proposed Aero Gas Turbine Complex is expected to pursue
an end-to-end Indian capability spanning the design, development, manufacturing,
testing, production and through-life support of advanced propulsion systems.
Beyond the AMCA programme, the partnership could also open avenues for wider collaboration in defence, civil aerospace, and emerging power and propulsion technologies, creating a broader platform for high-end engineering and manufacturing in India.
The alliance is aligned with the government's Atmanirbhar Bharat push for technology indigenisation and could contribute to positioning India as a global hub for advanced propulsion capabilities, while strengthening domestic expertise in one of the most complex and strategically important areas of aerospace technology.
