In a major stride
towards sustainable steelmaking and digital environmental governance, SAIL’s
Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) has launched a first-of-its-kind CO₂ Dashboard with 100 per cent ERP-SAP-based data
integration. Designed to provide real-time monitoring and analysis of carbon
emissions across the steelmaking value chain, the innovative digital platform
marks a significant milestone in RSP’s decarbonisation
journey and reinforces its commitment to environmentally responsible steel
production.
The CO₂ Dashboard was formally made Go-Live by Alok Verma,
Director In-Charge, RSP, at a programme held at Manthan Conference Hall on June
17, 2026.
Present on the occasion were Tarun Misra, ED (HR); Biswaranjan Palai, ED
(Works); Debabrata Dutta, ED (EMD), Kolkata; S. Pal Chowdhury, ED (Projects); Rajesh
Dasgupta, CGM (F&A) with additional charge of ED (F&A); several CGMs
and Heads of Departments of the plant; senior officials from EMD Kolkata; and
representatives of M/s Sentra World, Bengaluru.
Developed as part of
RSP’s broader decarbonisation strategy, the dashboard enables real-time
assessment of the plant’s carbon footprint and provides department-wise
emission analysis across key production units, including Sinter Plants, Coke
Ovens, Blast Furnaces, Steel Melting Shops and Rolling Mills. The platform also
helps identify major emission-contributing factors by correlating production
and technological parameters, thereby supporting data-driven decision-making
for emission reduction initiatives.
Addressing the
gathering, Alok Verma emphasized the importance of digital tools in achieving
sustainability goals. He said that the dashboard would play a crucial role in
enhancing environmental performance and guiding RSP's journey towards
low-carbon steel production. Debabrata Dutta explained the key features of the
dashboard. Tarun Misra lauded the initiative and said that every senior officer
should keep a tab on the emissions. In his address, Palai spoke about the need
for online monitoring to further improve efficiency, while Pal Chowdhury
underscored the importance of digitalization in ensuring accuracy and strategic
planning.
The dashboard has
been developed by M/s Sentra World, Bengaluru, in collaboration with the RSP
technical team comprising V. V. R. Murty, GM (Environment Engineering); S.
Narayana Rao, DGM (F&A); Mayak Kumar Singh, AGM (C&IT); Amulya Nayak,
AGM (PPC); Priti Padma Das, AGM (PPC); and Himanshu Mishra, Senior Manager
(EMD). Notably, the platform was developed in a record time of just 85 days.
The system calculates
carbon footprints using globally accepted methodologies, including the World
Steel Association framework, GHG Protocol, CBAM and CCTS. By capturing
production data directly from the ERP-SAP system on a daily basis, it
represents a unique and pioneering initiative within the Indian steel industry.
V. V. R. Murty briefed the gathering on the development of the dashboard and introduced the technical team associated with the project. Representatives from the Environment Management Division, SAIL, Kolkata, along with officials from M/s Sentra World, demonstrated the dashboard’s features and highlighted its capabilities. K. K. Sengupta, CGM (I&A), proposed the formal vote of thanks.
The launch of the CO₂ Dashboard marks yet another milestone in RSP’s ongoing efforts to leverage digital technologies for environmental excellence, operational efficiency and sustainable steel production.
