Reinforcing its commitment to sustainable industrial growth,
SAIL's Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) is emerging as a frontrunner in responsible
steelmaking by integrating cutting-edge technologies, resource efficiency and
environmental stewardship into its core operations. On the occasion of World
Nature Conservation Day, observed globally on July 28, the Steel Plant
highlighted a series of transformative initiatives aimed at conserving natural
resources, reducing emissions and advancing the circular economy.
Resource conservation has remained central to RSP's
sustainability strategy. The Plant has made significant investments in
innovative technologies that optimise resource utilisation while minimising
waste generation. Among its notable initiatives are the installation of a 0.18
MTPA Micro Pellet Plant for recycling iron-bearing wastes and successful trials
of biochar injection in blast furnace operations, underscoring its commitment
to cleaner and more sustainable steel production.
In a major step towards reducing fossil fuel consumption, RSP
has effectively harnessed waste gases generated during steelmaking to fuel the
boilers of Captive Power Plant-1, substantially lowering its dependence on
boiler-grade coal. The Plant has also achieved remarkable progress in the
utilisation of metallurgical by-products, with Blast Furnace slag being almost
entirely reused, while BOF and SMS slag are processed into value-added
materials for infrastructure and industrial applications.
Water conservation has emerged as another key pillar of RSP's environmental agenda. The commissioning of a 30 MLD Sewage Treatment Plant in the township has enabled large-scale treatment and reuse of wastewater. Complementing this effort is the state-of-the-art Treatment System-1 (TS-1), which consolidates wastewater from 13 locations within the Plant and treats up to 1,800 cubic metres per hour for reuse in the Construction Pump House and JUSCO Pump House. These initiatives have helped RSP achieve its lowest-ever specific water consumption of 2.94 cubic metres per tonne of crude steel during FY 2025-26, establishing a new benchmark in water efficiency. Work on the ambitious TS-2 project is also progressing at a rapid pace.
Extending its sustainability efforts beyond plant operations, RSP continues to foster environmental awareness through extensive plantation drives, cleanliness campaigns, observance of environmental occasions, school outreach programmes and community-focused CSR initiatives. By combining operational excellence with environmental responsibility, Rourkela Steel Plant is setting new standards in responsible steelmaking while demonstrating that industrial growth and nature conservation can go hand in hand.
