ROURKELA, APRIL 24, 2026

Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP), a unit of Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), has achieved significant milestones in product development during the just-concluded financial year, successfully producing high-value specialty steels for the defence, energy, automotive and electrical sectors.

Among its key achievements was the successful trial production of DMR 249A HR plates through the RH-OB process at Hot Strip Mill-2 (HSM-2). Designed for naval applications, these plates offer superior strength and toughness. RSP also supplied 1,492 tonnes of ASTM A387 Class 2 (Grade 11/12) Normalized and Tempered plates through the New Plate Mill-Special Plate Plant route. These plates are ideally suited for high-temperature pressure vessels used in boilers and reactors.

In the electrical steel segment, RSP rolled Grade-1 SiK HR coils with ultra-low carbon content (0.03-0.06%) for use in electrical machines. It also produced higher-grade CRNO sheets (50C470/50C400) through Steel Melting Shop-2 (SMS-2) using the RH-OB route, ensuring low core losses and enhanced efficiency in motors and transformers.

For the automotive sector, RSP successfully produced Extra Deep Drawing Steel (EDD) conforming to IS 11513 CR4 standards at HSM-2. This steel is ideal for manufacturing complex deep-drawn components, including automobile body panels, owing to its exceptional formabilityThese achievements reaffirm RSP's commitment to value-added products, technological innovation and self-reliance in strategic materials, while contributing to India's defence modernisation, clean energy expansion and automotive manufacturing growth. Backed by its robust upstream and downstream facilities and a highly skilled workforce, RSP continues to strengthen its position as a leader in sustainable steelmaking.
