ROURKELA, AUGUST 12, 2026

Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) of state-owned Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) is sharpening its product strategy to drive profitability, with a greater thrust on special and value-added steel and a sustained focus on meeting critical customer orders.

The steel major’s Rourkela unit has significantly strengthened the production and dispatch of specialised products from its saleable steel facilities, as it seeks to extract higher value from its product mix and respond more effectively to market demand.

During July, the order-versus-dispatch fulfilment for critical sections and special steel components from the Plate Mill stood at 91.7 per cent, while the New Plate Mill recorded 91.6 per cent fulfilment. HR Plate from the Hot Strip Mill also registered 91.6 per cent fulfilment, while HR Coil for sale achieved nearly 92 per cent.

The plant achieved 100 per cent fulfilment for PET products and plates manufactured at its Special Plate Plant, underlining its focus on specialised products and customer commitments.

Overall, against orders for 1,49,094 tonnes of special steel components received during July, RSP dispatched 1,37,397 tonnes, translating into a strong fulfilment rate of 92.2 per cent.

The momentum was equally visible during the April-July period of the current financial year, when RSP received orders for 6,02,271 tonnes of special and critical sections and dispatched 5,54,818 tonnes, achieving 92.1 per cent fulfilment.

Alongside improving order execution, RSP has also increased the contribution of special steel to its overall saleable steel production. Special steel components accounted for 39.9 per cent of total saleable steel production in July, while their share during April-July stood at 39.8 per cent, marking a significant improvement over the corresponding period of the previous year.

The plant is pursuing a clearly defined strategy of continuously moderating and optimising its product basket, with the objective of increasing the share of special and value-added steel. The approach is aimed at generating greater value from every tonne produced, while enhancing market responsiveness and strengthening the plant’s bottom line.

The rising share of specialised products, coupled with strong order fulfilment, reflects RSP’s broader effort to move towards a more value-oriented production mix and reinforce its profitability in an increasingly competitive steel market.
