Demonstrating its
commitment and sincerity towards providing compensation packages to hutment
dwellers being shifted from the area earmarked for the Greenfield expansion of
the Rourkela Steel Plant, the Plant has started issuing offers of engagement
for contractual jobs to one family member from each affected hutment. Five
persons from the hutments removed from Kate Basti were handed over the offers
on Monday.
It is worth
mentioning that Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) has already handed over cheques to
17 families who have shifted from Kate Basti to temporary transit shelters. As
per the compensation package, each affected family will receive total financial
assistance of Rs. 5,16,620.
Additionally, a 650
sq. ft. developed plotted land will also be provided against each hutment,
while dependent family members will be covered under ESI medical facilities.
Notably, Rourkela
Steel Plant is poised for a monumental leap that promises to redefine the
region’s economic horizon once again. RSP is set to expand and double its
production capacity from the current 4.65 Million Tons Per Annum (MTPA) to 9.8
MTPA. This expansion is expected to transform local commerce and usher in a new
wave of prosperity across the Sundargarh region and Odisha.
To implement the
Greenfield project, RSP will utilise the contiguous 1,200-acre tract of its own
land. The land is under the official possession of Rourkela Steel Plant.
However, various encroachments have emerged on the site over time. The Plant
has proactively offered a compassionate compensation package to families
currently residing on the land, ensuring that as the Plant grows, the community
progresses alongside it.
