Steel Authority of India Ltd's (SAIL) Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) has achieved a new production milestone, with its Steel Melting Shop-II (SMS-II) recording an all-time high of 82 converter blows and producing 12,994 tonnes of crude steel in a single day on August 2, reflecting enhanced operational efficiency and capacity utilisation.

The latest achievement surpassed the previous benchmark of 81 converter blows, recorded twice earlier — with 12,514 tonnes of crude steel produced on January 4, 2026, and 12,818 tonnes on March 27, 2021.

Congratulating the team during his visit to the SMS-II complex on Monday, Director In-Charge of RSP, Alok Verma, termed the feat a reflection of meticulous planning, seamless coordination and resilient teamwork across departments.

He commended employees and supporting departments for the landmark performance and urged them to continue raising production benchmarks while maintaining the highest standards of safety, quality and operational discipline.

The visit was attended by Executive Director (HR) Tarun Mishra, Executive Director (Works) Biswa Ranjan Palai, Executive Director (MM) Anil Kumar, Executive Director (Mines) M.P. Singh, Executive Director (Projects) Sudip Palchowdhury, CGM (Finance & Accounts) Rajesh Dasgupta, along with several senior officials, who congratulated the workforce for the achievement.

According to the company, the commissioning of the fourth Ladle Heating Furnace (LHF) in June 2026 and the fourth Continuous Caster in January 2026 has significantly strengthened SMS-II's production capabilities, contributing to the record performance.

The company said the milestone was made possible through the coordinated efforts of multiple departments, including Operations, Mechanical and Electrical wings of SMS-II, Blast Furnace, Oxygen Plant, Production Planning and Control, Research & Control Laboratory, Traffic & Raw Material, Computer and Information Technology, Instrumentation and Automation, Calcining Plant-II, Flux & Refractory, and Material Recovery Department.
