Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL), the country’s largest public sector steelmaker, has earned the prestigious ‘Top Employer’ Certification from the Top Employers Institute, adding another global workplace credential to its portfolio.

The Maharatna public sector enterprise received the certification on August 24, 2026, and the recognition will remain valid until December 2027.

The achievement assumes greater significance as SAIL also holds its third consecutive ‘Great Place To Work’ certification, awarded by the Great Place to Work Institute and valid until February 2027.

With both certifications concurrently in place, SAIL has joined the select group of Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs) to secure two of the world’s most rigorous and independently validated workplace credentials at the same time.

The ‘Top Employer’ Certification is based on a comprehensive, fact-based assessment of an organisation’s people practices. Its HR Best Practices Survey evaluates six key HR domains and 20 strategic topics covering the entire employee lifecycle.

Each submission is independently validated by qualified HR auditors to ensure accuracy, credibility and consistency. The assessment is further reinforced through global benchmarking against nearly 2,500 certified employers across 131 countries.

The certification recognises SAIL’s sustained efforts to strengthen its human resource practices through initiatives spanning workplace flexibility, performance management, self-paced learning, succession planning and leadership development.

The company’s focus on organisational culture, employee engagement and wellbeing, along with collaborations with industry leaders and premier institutes for continuous benchmarking, has also contributed to the recognition.

The two certifications provide complementary perspectives on SAIL’s workplace ecosystem. While the Great Place To Work certification is centred on the Trust Index©, a confidential employee survey that captures perceptions of leadership credibility, fairness and pride in the workplace, the Top Employer Certification evaluates the maturity and strength of HR systems and practices.

The latter specifically examines whether people processes are formally established, consistently implemented and aligned with global benchmarks.

 “In essence, one reflects how employees experience the workplace, while the other assesses the strength of the HR systems and practices that underpin that experience,” the company said.

For SAIL, which employs more than 47,000 people across its integrated steel plants and units in India, holding both credentials at the same time represents recognition of its employee experience as well as the robustness of its HR systems and practices.
