SAIL's Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) has intensified its focus on value-added steel production, with its Hot Strip Mill-2 recording significant gains in thinner-gauge and special-grade products while achieving its best-ever August production in HR Coil and HR Plate.

The performance comes as the state-run steelmaker increasingly aligns its production mix with market demand and value realisation, with HSM-2 placing particular emphasis on high-value products during August 2026.

The mill produced 843 coils totalling 16,395 tonnes of HR Coil in 2 mm and below thickness during the month, catering to rising demand for thinner-gauge products and supporting improved sales realisation.

In a major push in the special steel segment, HSM-2 also rolled 61 coils of API X70 PSL2 grade steel in 15.9 mm thickness during a dedicated campaign. The production amounted to around 1,770 tonnes and demonstrated the mill's capability to manufacture stringent-grade steel for evolving customer requirements.

The increased focus on thinner sections and special grades is expected to bolster Rourkela Steel Plant's value realisation and contribute positively to its bottom line. It also reflects the plant's ability to adapt its production strategy to changing market conditions while supporting SAIL's broader emphasis on a smart and value-oriented product mix.

HSM-2, meanwhile, continued to manufacture a broad range of grades and thicknesses based on customer orders and prevailing market requirements, maintaining a balanced and customer-centric product portfolio.

The mill's best-ever August production in both HR Coil and HR Plate further added to the operational milestone, highlighting its improved productivity and manufacturing flexibility.

The latest performance underscores HSM-2's growing capability to combine operational efficiency with product flexibility and market responsiveness, strengthening Rourkela Steel Plant's efforts to maximise value addition and enhance overall business performance.
