In a significant move to bolster its future growth trajectory, Steel Authority of India Limited’s Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) has signed a key consultancy agreement with MECON Limited on March 16, 2026, marking a major step towards its planned Greenfield Expansion.

The contract, titled “Appointment of Consultant for Preparation of Feasibility Report (FR) and Detailed Project Report (DPR) for Greenfield Expansion of RSP”, was formalized in the presence of senior officials including Rahul Agarwal, CGM (Projects) and officiating ED (Projects), and A.K. Sahu, CGM (Proj-Commercial), along with other officers from RSP and MECON Limited.

The ambitious consultancy agreement has been envisaged to significantly scale up RSP’s production capabilities, targeting an increase of crude steel production by 5.0 MTPA and Hot Metal production by 5.15 MTPA through the proposed Greenfield Expansion project. The scope of work includes preparation of the Feasibility Report (FR) and Detailed Project Report (DPR), along with critical activities such as soil investigation, topographical surveys, and obtaining environmental clearances for the expansion.

With MECON Limited, a premier engineering consultancy organization, at the helm of the planning process, the project is expected to benefit from a comprehensive techno-economic evaluation and meticulous detailing. The studies and surveys undertaken will provide essential technical insights and facilitate statutory approvals necessary for the seamless execution of the expansion plans.

This development marks a crucial milestone in RSP’s journey towards capacity enhancement, improved operational efficiency, and long-term strategic growth under the broader vision of SAIL. It also underscores the plant’s commitment to systematic planning, adoption of advanced technologies, and sustainable industrial development as it gears up for its next phase of expansion.
