In a significant boost to clean energy adoption and household savings, TP Northern Odisha Distribution Limited (TPNODL) has recorded a sharp rise in consumer participation under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana in Keonjhar district. Hundreds of households are now benefiting from rooftop solar installations, with more than 700 consumers across the district receiving “zero unit electricity billing” during April 2026 alone after adopting rooftop solar systems under the scheme. The initiative has emerged as a major financial relief for consumers, especially during the peak summer season when electricity consumption typically rises substantially.

In line with the directives of the Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy to observe May as “Solar Month”, TPNODL, a joint venture of Tata Power and the Government of Odisha, has intensified the implementation of rooftop solar installations under the Utility-Led Aggregation (ULA) model of the scheme. Under this initiative, residential consumers with a 1-kW electricity connection can install high-quality rooftop solar systems at an affordable cost of just ₹1,875. To further enhance accessibility and convenience, Easy Monthly Installment (EMI) facilities are also being extended for meter charges, enabling more households to transition towards clean and sustainable energy solutions.

According to available data, more than 3,400 consumers in Keonjhar district have already installed rooftop solar systems under the PM Surya Ghar Yojana. This includes 987 consumers from Keonjhar Division, 498 consumers from Joda Division and 1,920 consumers from Anandpur Division. Significantly, a total of 704 consumers received zero unit electricity billing during April 2026, underlining the growing impact of rooftop solar systems in substantially reducing household electricity expenses and promoting energy self-sufficiency.

Sharing his experience, Vijay Kumar Sahu from the Harichandanpur area of Keonjhar stated that after installing a 1-kW rooftop solar system, his electricity bills have reduced to nearly zero over the past few months. He added that he now pays only a nominal fixed charge and that the scheme has brought considerable financial relief to his family. Similarly, Sabita Palei from the Ghatagaon area stated that before installing a 3-kW rooftop solar system, her monthly electricity bills ranged between ₹1,500 and ₹1,600. However, after adopting the solar system, her electricity expenses have reduced drastically, with bills dropping below ₹100 during several months. Several other consumers across the district have also expressed satisfaction after witnessing substantial reductions in their monthly electricity bills through rooftop solar adoption.

TPNODL continues to organise extensive public awareness programmes across its operational areas to encourage more consumers to avail the benefits of the PM Surya Ghar Yojana and embrace clean, affordable and sustainable energy solutions.
