Sony India has
expanded its full-frame Alpha mirrorless lens portfolio with two new G Master
super-telephoto prime lenses, the FE 400mm F4.5 GM OSS and FE 600mm F6.3 GM
OSS, positioning both as the world’s lightest lenses in their respective
categories.
The company said the
new lenses weigh approximately 994 grams and 995 grams, respectively, bringing
400mm and 600mm focal lengths into a sub-one-kilogram form factor aimed at
photographers who require long-range reach without compromising mobility.
Sony said the
lightweight construction and optimised weight distribution place the centre of
gravity closer to the camera body, allowing photographers to maintain framing,
track moving subjects and perform panning shots more comfortably while shooting
handheld.
The new lenses are
targeted at demanding applications including bird and wildlife photography, sports
and other situations involving fast-moving or distant subjects.
“Sony has always been committed to pushing the
boundaries of imaging technology while understanding the evolving needs of
photographers,” said Mukesh Srivastava, Head of Imaging & Professional
Solutions.
“With the new FE 400mm F4.5 GM OSS and FE
600mm F6.3 GM OSS, we are taking this a step further by making long telephoto
reach more accessible in a lightweight form,” he added.
The FE 400mm F4.5 GM
OSS measures about 242 mm in length, while the FE 600mm F6.3 GM OSS measures
about 263 mm. Both lenses have a maximum diameter of approximately 108 mm.
For image quality,
Sony has incorporated three Super ED glass elements and one ED glass element to
suppress chromatic aberrations and other optical distortions associated with
super-telephoto shooting. The lenses also feature Sony’s Nano AR Coating II to
minimise flare and ghosting.
An 11-blade circular
aperture, along with optical design and manufacturing optimisation, is intended
to produce the smooth background bokeh associated with Sony’s G Master series.
Autofocus is powered
by two XD Linear Motors and a dedicated control algorithm, enabling fast,
precise and quiet focusing. The lenses are compatible with the Alpha 9 III’s
continuous shooting capability of up to 120 frames per second with AF/AE
tracking.
Built-in optical
image stabilisation further supports handheld shooting, while compatibility
with Active Mode and coordinated stabilisation functions on supported camera
bodies is designed to reduce camera shake during still and video capture.
The lenses also
support Sony teleconverters, extending the FE 400mm F4.5 GM OSS to up to 800mm
and the FE 600mm F6.3 GM OSS to up to 1,200mm.
Both models feature dust- and moisture-resistant construction and a fluorine coating on the front element.
Sony said the lenses are available in India through Sony Centres, Alpha Flagship stores, authorised dealers, major electronic retailers and e-commerce platforms including Amazon and Flipkart from September 24, 2026.
