Tata Power Renewable Energy Ltd (TPREL) on Monday said its utility-scale renewable energy portfolio has expanded to 12.3 GW, with operational capacity crossing the 7 GW milestone following the commissioning of a 100 MW group captive solar project in Kayathar, Tamil Nadu.

The 100 MW project, located at Vellalankottai and Nalandhula villages in Kayathar, marks another step in TPREL’s expansion of its renewable energy portfolio and strengthens its role in India’s clean energy transition.

The company said its operational capacity of over 7 GW comprises more than 5.7 GW of solar and 1.3 GW of wind assets. An additional 5.3 GW of projects are under various stages of development and are slated for phased commissioning over the next six to 24 months.

Of the upcoming capacity, 2.2 GW comprises solar projects, while 3.1 GW is from wind projects, providing further momentum to TPREL’s growth plans.

The newly commissioned project will supply renewable power to three Tata Group companies. Of the contracted capacity, TP Solar Ltd, Tata Power’s solar manufacturing arm, will receive 40.625 MW, Tata Electronics Pvt Ltd will receive 53.125 MW, and Tata Realty and Infrastructure Ltd will receive 6.25 MW.

The project is expected to generate 240.63 million units of clean electricity annually and offset around 1.5 lakh tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions every year, supporting the Tata Group’s broader decarbonisation efforts.

A key technological feature of the project is the deployment of Flexible Terrain Compatible (FTC) Single Axis Tracker technology, described by TPREL as a first-of-its-kind deployment in India for a Tata project. The tracker technology is designed to enhance solar generation while improving operational efficiency across varying terrain conditions.

The project is equipped with 2,61,660 Mono PERC bifacial solar modules and has been developed with a focus on maximising energy generation, the company said.

Power generated from the project will be evacuated through the Kayathar 400 kV Grid Substation, facilitating reliable transmission and efficient delivery to the beneficiary Tata Group companies.

TPREL said the commissioning demonstrates its capabilities in executing large-scale renewable energy projects through engineering expertise, construction practices and a focus on quality.

With a utility portfolio of 12.3 GW, the company has a broad presence across renewable energy assets, including utility-scale solar, floating solar and battery energy storage system (BESS) projects.

The expansion comes as India seeks to accelerate the development of clean energy capacity and achieve its target of 500 GW of non-fossil fuel-based capacity by 2030.
