TP Northern Odisha Distribution Limited (TPNODL), a joint venture between Tata Power and the Odisha government, has crossed the 50,000-mark in rooftop solar installations across its five-district service area, with cumulative installations reaching 51,004, the discom said on Saturday.

The milestone comes amid a sustained month-on-month acceleration in rooftop solar adoption, indicating growing consumer confidence in renewable energy and a broader shift towards sustainable electricity consumption in northern Odisha.

Baleshwar has emerged as the leading district with 18,559 installations, followed by Mayurbhanj with 10,824, Jajpur with 9,295, Bhadrak with 6,575 and Kendujhar with 5,751 installations.

The discom attributed the widespread adoption to a combination of government subsidies, simplified application processes, localised execution support and dedicated consumer services.

The increased adoption has also translated into tangible savings for consumers, with a significant number of participating households receiving zero-unit electricity bills, while most others have reported a substantial reduction in their monthly power expenditure.

The growth in rooftop solar installations has been supported by policy initiatives of the Centre and the Odisha government, coupled with streamlined implementation by TPNODL and its business associates.

Under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, residential consumers are eligible for substantial financial assistance that lowers the upfront cost of installing rooftop solar systems. A standard 3-kW system is eligible for combined Central and State subsidies of up to Rs 1.38 lakh, while a 2-kW system can receive financial assistance of up to Rs 1.10 lakh.

In another initiative aimed at expanding access to clean energy among low-income households, the government has introduced the 1-kW ULA model, under which installations can be undertaken through discoms at an initial cost of Rs 1,875.

"Surpassing 50,000 installations reflects the growing trust of consumers in sustainable energy solutions. This milestone belongs to the consumers of northern Odisha who have embraced solar power as a reliable alternative source of energy," TPNODL Chief Executive Officer Dushyant Kumar Tyagi said.

"We remain committed to a consumer-centric approach focused on enhancing operational efficiency, streamlining consumer services, and expanding equitable access to affordable and reliable electricity for households across the region," he added.

TPNODL said it is simultaneously strengthening its electricity network through continuous infrastructure augmentation, technology deployment and process improvements to support the region's transition towards cleaner energy.

The company's approach is anchored around safety, operational excellence, commercial stewardship and sustainability, it said, adding that systematic network strengthening and responsible resource management would remain key priorities.

The discom said it would continue to focus on improving power reliability and quality, enhancing consumer experience and promoting inclusive and sustainable growth across its service area.
