TPWODL's rooftop solar drive helps cut 1.32 lakh tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually

Accelerating Western Odisha's transition to clean energy, TP Western Odisha Distribution Limited (TPWODL), a joint venture between Tata Power and the Government of Odisha, has enabled an estimated annual reduction of nearly 1.32 lakh tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions through the installation of 38,638 rooftop solar systems with a cumulative installed capacity of 111.42 MW across its operational area.

This milestone, achieved through the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana and TPWODL's consumer-friendly ULA Model, marks a significant step towards reducing carbon emissions while making solar energy more affordable and accessible for consumers.

Of the total installations, 38,025 rooftop solar systems have been commissioned for domestic consumers under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, while 613 commercial establishments have adopted rooftop solar solutions, taking the cumulative installed capacity to 111.42 MW. During the last month alone, an additional 11.922 MW of rooftop solar capacity was added, reflecting the growing momentum of renewable energy adoption across Western Odisha.

Speaking on the achievement, TPWODL CEO Parveen Verma said, "The growing adoption of rooftop solar reflects consumers' increasing commitment to clean energy. Through the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana and our ULA Model, we are making solar power affordable and accessible while enabling every installation to contribute towards reducing carbon emissions and building a more sustainable Western Odisha."

Beyond its environmental benefits, the rooftop solar initiative is also delivering significant economic gains for consumers. In June 2026, as many as 10,112 households across TPWODL's operational area recorded zero-unit electricity bills, highlighting the growing financial benefits of generating clean energy from rooftop solar systems.

The initiative's environmental impact extends beyond carbon reduction. The clean electricity generated from these rooftop solar installations is estimated to save nearly 1.30 lakh tonnes of coal annually, while delivering an ecological benefit equivalent to planting approximately 60 lakh mature trees every year, making rooftop solar a key contributor to climate action and sustainable development.

The rapid adoption of rooftop solar has been driven by attractive financial incentives available under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, jointly supported by the Government of India and the Government of Odisha. Consumers installing a 3 kW rooftop solar system costing around ₹2 lakh are eligible for financial assistance of up to ₹1.38 lakh. Similarly, a 2 kW system costing approximately ₹1.40 lakh is eligible for subsidies of up to ₹1.10 lakh, substantially reducing the upfront investment.

To further expand access to rooftop solar, TPWODL has introduced its 1 kW ULA Model, under which eligible households can install a rooftop solar system by paying only ₹1,875. TPWODL manages the complete installation process and provides a five-year warranty on equipment along with a 25-year performance warranty on solar panels, ensuring long-term reliability and hassle-free operation.
