Urbanisation,
electrification and digitisation are driving India’s next phase of development
and are set to fuel a boom in the wires and cables industry, Aditya Birla Group
Chairman Kumar Mangalam Birla said on Thursday as the conglomerate launched its
new wires and cables business Ultravolt with an investment of ₹1,800 crore.
Ultravolt will be the
second-largest player in the wires segment by capacity, the group said, marking
its fourth major new-business foray in three years after paints, B2B e-commerce
and jewellery retail.
“Wires and cables are becoming central to
India’s next phase of development. They sit at the intersection of three mega
trends in the Indian economy — urbanisation, electrification, and
digitisation,” Birla said.
He said more than 100
million new homes expected over the next decade, expanding energy
infrastructure and the rapid rise of data centres are poised to drive strong
growth in the category.
“Our distinctive advantage comes from a deep
understanding of the product, its underlying components, and the adjacent
ecosystems,” Birla said.
He added that
successful new-business creation has increasingly become a core part of the
group’s DNA and an important source of differentiation.
“I increasingly see the Aditya Birla Group as
providing the platform and engine for new bets,” he said.
At launch, Ultravolt
will offer a comprehensive portfolio of wires, cables and conduits, with plans
to progressively expand across the full kilovolt spectrum, specialty cable
applications and a broader range of electrical accessories.
The business is
anchored by a new manufacturing facility at Jhagadia in Gujarat’s Bharuch
district. The plant, with an installed capacity of 10,98,000 km, commenced
commercial production on September 1, 2026.
Dilip Gaur, Director,
Ultravolt, said the company is taking a pan-India approach from the outset,
with plans to reach more than one lakh retailers and activate availability
through over 5,000 UltraTech Building Solutions outlets.
The initial rollout
will cover more than 500 districts and 6,000 pin codes, he said.
Sriram Rangarajan,
CEO, Ultravolt, said the company is launching with home wires, flexible wires
and cables designed for residential, commercial, industrial and infrastructure
applications, with plans to expand into a broader range of electrical
accessories.
Birla said the group’s entry into new businesses is guided by strong structural growth prospects and the opportunity to disrupt established markets by leveraging its brand, capital, scale and deep ecosystem insights.
Ultravolt will seek to differentiate itself beyond pricing, with product quality, technology, availability and customer service forming the key pillars of its strategy.
