Celebrating the vibrant spirit of Western Odisha and
reaffirming its commitment to preserving the state's rich cultural legacy,
Vedanta Aluminium, India’s largest producer of aluminium, marked Sambalpuri Day
with a grand community celebration under its flagship cultural development
initiative, Project VedKala. Bringing together more than 100 community members
from Parmanpur and Dalki gram panchayats in Jharsuguda district, the event
turned into a colourful tribute to Sambalpuri heritage, showcasing the region’s
timeless traditions through folk music, dance, indigenous art and community
participation while inspiring the younger generation to carry forward Odisha’s
priceless cultural treasures.
Observed on the birth anniversary of eminent linguist and
scholar Guru Satya Narayan Bohidar, Sambalpuri Day honours the unique cultural
identity of Western Odisha, celebrated across the world for its exquisite
handwoven textiles, vibrant folk music and dance, literary excellence and
indigenous art forms. The occasion also underscores the collective
responsibility of preserving these traditions and passing them on to future
generations.
Echoing this spirit, Vedanta Aluminium curated a series of
engaging cultural programmes that provided a vibrant platform for local
communities to celebrate their identity and showcase the richness of Sambalpuri
traditions. The festivities featured spirited Sambalpuri dance and song
competitions, lively cultural performances, a musical chair competition,
interactive sessions highlighting the importance of safeguarding Sambalpuri
heritage, and a special felicitation ceremony honouring outstanding
participants and community champions for their contribution to preserving local
culture.
A key highlight of the celebration was Project VedKala,
Vedanta Aluminium’s flagship community development initiative dedicated to
reviving Odisha’s traditional art forms while creating sustainable livelihood
opportunities for rural artisans. The programme currently supports more than
100 artisans in Jharsuguda through structured training in bamboo craft, Saura
art and Sabai grass handicrafts, while facilitating market linkages to enhance
income generation. By blending skill development with cultural preservation,
the initiative is nurturing indigenous craftsmanship, encouraging cultural
entrepreneurship and ensuring that Odisha’s traditional art forms continue to
flourish.
Speaking on the occasion, C Chandru, CEO, Vedanta Aluminium -
Jharsuguda, said, “Sambalpuri Day is a vivid reminder of Odisha’s immense
cultural wealth, and we remain committed to supporting initiatives that empower
communities and safeguard Odisha’s unique heritage for generations to come.
Through Project VedKala, we are creating opportunities for local communities to
celebrate, sustain and share their rich artistic traditions while enabling
livelihood opportunities rooted in culture preservation.”
Sharing her experience, Dileshwari Buda, a participant from Siriapali, said, “This celebration gave us an opportunity to proudly showcase our traditions and Project VedKala has encouraged many of us to preserve our art and pass it on to the younger generation. Such programmes by Vedanta Aluminium inspires us to keep our treasured heritage alive.”
