JHARSUGUDA, JUNE 25, 2026

Vedanta Aluminium, India’s largest aluminium producer, has partnered closely with the Jharsuguda district administration to launch Suryodhyam, a comprehensive rural development initiative aimed at transforming seven villages in the district into self-sustaining, community-centric ecosystems. The initiative is expected to benefit more than 8,000 people through targeted interventions in infrastructure development, healthcare, education, livelihoods, and local governance.

Under the Suryodhyam model village programme, a wide range of infrastructure projects will be undertaken across the identified villages. These include the improvement of roads, drainage systems, street lighting, Primary Health Centres, anganwadis, schools, water bodies, and irrigation infrastructure. The initiative will also focus on enhancing access to healthcare, education, and livelihood opportunities while strengthening grassroots institutions such as youth clubs, Village Development Committees, Panchayat sub-committees, and Self-Help Groups (SHGs) to promote greater community participation in governance and development planning.

Formalising this shared vision, Vedanta Aluminium signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in the presence of the Jharsuguda district administration, reaffirming their continued collaboration towards sustainable rural development. A distinctive feature of the initiative is that each of the seven villages will be ‘adopted’ by senior leaders of Vedanta Aluminium, Jharsuguda, who will provide strategic oversight and active engagement to ensure effective implementation of development activities.

Speaking on the occasion, C. Chandru, CEO - Vedanta Aluminium, Jharsuguda, said, “Through Suryodhyam, we are investing in stronger, more resilient communities in the vicinity of our operations by strengthening rural infrastructure, expanding livelihood generation avenues, and enabling community-led development. Through this effort, we aim to build community ownership of progress and create scalable models of village development that deliver lasting value for Jharsuguda district, while also supporting its long-term growth.”

Kunal Motiram Chavan, District Collector and District Magistrate, Jharsuguda, said, “Vedanta’s Suryodhyam initiative, which is being implemented in close coordination with the Jharsuguda district administration, will complement our ongoing efforts to strengthen rural infrastructure, improve access to essential services, and enhance the quality of life in villages. We see this as an opportunity for enabling joint public-private efforts to drive coordinated, outcome-oriented development and achieve inclusive rural transformation.”

Suryodhyam aims to establish the seven villages as scalable and replicable models of integrated rural development. In FY26, Vedanta Aluminium’s community development initiatives in Jharsuguda positively impacted more than seven lakh people across 61 villages. Through focused interventions in education, healthcare, livelihoods, women’s empowerment, rural infrastructure, and grassroots arts and sports, the company continues to contribute to sustainable and inclusive growth while improving the quality of life of local communities.
