Marking the occasion
of Utkal Divas, Vedanta Aluminium, India’s largest producer of aluminium
delivering 100 per cent value addition within Odisha, reiterated its long-term
commitment to the state’s industrial and socio-economic growth. With planned
investments of ₹1.8
lakh crore in the pipeline and over ₹1 lakh crore already invested, the company
has generated more than 5 lakh employment opportunities since inception.
Vedanta’s operations in Odisha spanning aluminium, power, iron
ore and allied businesses contribute over ₹9,000 crore annually to the exchequer and account for
approximately 3 per cent of the state’s Gross State Domestic
Product (GSDP).
Vedanta Aluminium
operates fully integrated, world-class assets across the state, covering the
entire value chain from bauxite to finished aluminium products. Jharsuguda
hosts the world’s largest aluminium smelter with a capacity of 1.8 MTPA, while
Lanjigarh is home to a 5 MTPA alumina refinery, both considered strategically
significant in the global aluminium supply chain.
Strengthening its
long-term growth roadmap, Vedanta Aluminium is progressing a ₹1.8 lakh crore greenfield project in
Odisha’s Dhenkanal and Rayagada districts, envisioned as an integrated
aluminium manufacturing ecosystem. The project
comprises a 3 MTPA aluminium smelter, a 4,900 MW power plant, a 6 MTPA alumina
refinery, and a world-class downstream Aluminium Park, ensuring seamless
upstream and downstream integration. The proposed development is expected to
generate up to 50,000 jobs in the initial phase and over 2 lakh employment
opportunities over time, while fostering a strong ancillary ecosystem and
reinforcing Odisha’s position as a globally competitive aluminium hub.
Speaking on the
occasion, Rajiv Kumar, CEO, Vedanta Aluminium, said, “Aluminium is a critical
metal for India’s future, with demand projected to rise nearly sixfold by
FY2047. Odisha, with the country’s largest bauxite reserves, is naturally
poised to anchor this growth. Our upcoming investments are transformative in
strengthening India’s aluminium self-reliance, creating large-scale employment,
energising local enterprises, and building a future-ready industrial ecosystem.
We appreciate the proactive support of the Government of Odisha, and on Utkal Divas,
reaffirm our commitment to making Odisha the aluminium capital of the world.”
Vedanta Aluminium’s
sustained investments have driven broad-based economic participation, deepened
industrial capabilities, and enhanced global market integration for Odisha. The
company supports more than 20,000 MSMEs and business partners, strengthening
local entrepreneurship and ancillary industries. Its focused investments in
underserved regions have also contributed to Kalahandi’s recognition as an
Aspirational District by NITI Aayog. At the same time, Vedanta Aluminium has
positioned Odisha strongly in global trade by exporting its products to more
than 60 countries worldwide.
Beyond its industrial
footprint, Vedanta Aluminium has invested over ₹500 crore in community development
initiatives, positively impacting more than 10 lakh people across Odisha.
Through sustained and focused interventions, the company continues to promote
inclusive and sustainable development, strengthening livelihoods, enhancing
human capital, and preserving the rich cultural heritage of the state.
