As India strengthens its position as a global manufacturing and innovation hub, creating meaningful pathways for young women to participate in the country’s industrial growth has never been more important. Advancing this vision, Vedanta Aluminium’s Project Panchhi has empowered more than 180 young women across Odisha and Chhattisgarh through immersive industry exposure, hands-on learning and mentorship across 30+ business functions. By connecting classroom knowledge with real-world business challenges, the initiative is helping young women build industry-relevant capabilities, explore emerging career opportunities and prepare to become the next generation of professionals in India’s manufacturing, mining and metals sectors.

Guided by the vision of Vedanta Chairman Anil Agarwal, Project Panchhi was launched as a pioneering initiative to empower young women from economically disadvantaged communities across rural India. The programme focuses on supporting higher education, providing meaningful industry exposure and creating pathways to sustainable careers, helping transform aspirations into achievements while fostering a stronger and more diverse talent pool for India’s industrial ecosystem.

As part of the programme, more than 180 students from disciplines including engineering, management, commerce, economics, biotechnology, chemistry, physics, mathematics and data science undertook internships at Vedanta Aluminium’s operations in Odisha and Chhattisgarh. The immersive experience provided participants with practical exposure to advanced manufacturing and mining practices, sustainability, digital transformation and a wide range of corporate and operational functions.

Through structured projects, cross-functional engagement and mentorship from experienced industry professionals, the participants applied their academic learning to live business assignments. Their projects spanned manufacturing, mining, finance, sustainability, digital transformation, logistics, commercial operations, quality, environment, occupational health, administration, CSR and business excellence, offering them a holistic understanding of the operational, technological and business dimensions of one of India’s leading aluminium producers.

Speaking on the initiative, Rajesh Kumar, CEO, Vedanta Aluminium, said, “India’s growth story will be shaped by how effectively we create opportunities for every section of society to participate in and contribute to economic progress. Project Panchhi reflects our commitment to fostering greater inclusion by encouraging young women to step forward, pursue their aspirations and become active contributors to the nation’s development. We are proud to support an initiative that helps create a stronger foundation for a more diverse and inclusive future.”

Praveen Purohit, Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO), Vedanta Aluminium, added, “At Vedanta Aluminium, we believe that true empowerment comes from opportunity. Through Project Panchhi, we are providing young women with a platform to explore their potential, gain meaningful industry exposure and access opportunities that can transform their aspirations into careers. Our goal is to help these talented women break barriers, build greater financial independence and emerge as role models within their communities. When women are given the opportunity to learn, contribute and succeed, the impact extends far beyond individuals, creating lasting change for generations to come.”

Reflecting the evolving needs of the industrial sector, Project Panchhi placed a strong emphasis on AI, digitalisation and innovation-led learning. Participants worked with AI-enabled tools, digital reporting platforms, business intelligence systems and analytics-driven decision-making processes, gaining exposure to technologies that are increasingly shaping modern industrial operations.

Several participants also undertook projects focused on process optimisation, operational excellence and sustainability, developing solutions aligned with real-world business requirements. This project-based approach enabled them to understand how emerging technologies, data-driven practices and innovation frameworks are being applied to address complex industrial challenges.

Beyond technical capabilities, the programme offered participants an opportunity to develop professional skills through collaboration with cross-functional teams, interaction with industry leaders and exposure to workplace practices. The experience is designed to strengthen their confidence, career readiness and understanding of the opportunities available within India’s rapidly evolving industrial landscape.

Through Project Panchhi, Vedanta Aluminium is strengthening the bridge between education and employment, while advancing inclusive opportunities for women and local youth. By investing in industry exposure, mentorship and future-ready skills, the initiative aims to nurture a generation of capable young women who can contribute meaningfully to India’s manufacturing and economic growth.
