When age-old artistry meets contemporary design, tradition
can become a powerful pathway to economic opportunity. Giving this idea a
tangible form, Vedanta Aluminium,
India’s largest aluminium producer, is strengthening women-led livelihoods in
Jharsuguda through Project VedKala, its community livelihood initiative dedicated
to nurturing traditional crafts while creating sustainable market opportunities
for rural artisans. As part of the initiative, over 60 women artisans
participated in a three-day Medium-Density Fibreboard (MDF) Craft & Skill
Development Workshop, learning to reinterpret Odisha’s traditional Saura art
into contemporary lifestyle and souvenir products.
The workshop was conducted at the VedKala Experience Centre
in collaboration with the First Sutra Foundation, Odisha Livelihood Mission
(OLM), and the Department of Handicrafts, Government of Odisha. The training
equipped participants with practical skills to create products such as MDF
jewellery, decorative fridge magnets and key rings inspired by Saura art. The
programme concluded with the certification of participating artisans, marking
an important step towards expanding their skills and livelihood prospects.
The workshop is an extension of Project VedKala’s broader
endeavour to preserve Odisha’s rich artistic traditions while connecting them
with evolving consumer preferences and sustainable livelihood opportunities for
women. Led by State Awardee Gurakh Chandra Nayak, an accomplished exponent of
tribal art, the training introduced participants to contemporary applications
of Saura art across a diverse range of products, including earrings, pendants,
bracelets, fridge magnets and key rings.
Through hands-on sessions in design, product development and
market-oriented craftsmanship, the artisans gained skills to diversify their
product portfolios and explore new avenues for income generation. Project
VedKala currently supports more than 100 artisans in Jharsuguda through
training in Bamboo, Saura and Sabai Grass crafts, complemented by initiatives
aimed at strengthening market access and promoting sustainable livelihoods.
Speaking on the initiative, C Chandru, CEO, Vedanta Aluminium – Jharsuguda, said, “Odisha’s
rich artistic traditions represent both an invaluable cultural legacy and a
significant opportunity for community-led economic progress. Through Project
VedKala, we are creating an ecosystem where women artisans can
strengthen their skillsets, embrace contemporary design and access newer
livelihood opportunities. Our endeavour is to enable these women to emerge as
confident entrepreneurs while ensuring that indigenous art forms such as Saura
continue to remain relevant, valued and economically sustainable for
generations to come.”
Jharana Bhusan, a participating artisan from Patrapali, said,
“This training showed us how the traditional art forms we have grown up with
can be seamlessly adapted into everyday products. Learning these techniques has
given us new ideas and the confidence to create products that can appeal to
more customers. We hope these skills will help us build sustainable livelihoods
while continuing to preserve the art that has been passed down to us.”
Through Project VedKala, Vedanta Aluminium
is fostering women-led livelihoods while contributing to the preservation and
contemporary revival of Odisha’s artistic heritage. The initiative forms part
of the company’s wider community development efforts spanning sustainable
livelihoods, women’s empowerment, education, healthcare, water and sanitation,
community infrastructure, biodiversity conservation, and grassroots sports and
culture. These programmes are implemented in partnership with government
agencies, civil society organisations and local communities.
Vedanta Aluminium’s commitment to Odisha extends beyond its
operational footprint, with a focus on enabling inclusive and sustainable
socio-economic development. In FY26 alone, the company’s social impact
programmes reached more than 8 lakh beneficiaries through initiatives across
healthcare, education and livelihood enhancement. Through continued investments
in community-led development, Vedanta Aluminium remains committed to creating
opportunities that strengthen livelihoods, preserve cultural heritage and
contribute to a more inclusive future for communities across Odisha.
