Vedanta Iron and Steel on Monday reported a 32.1 per cent year-on-year reduction in consolidated net loss to Rs 324 crore for the September quarter of FY27, even as revenue from operations declined and operating earnings witnessed a sharp sequential contraction.

The company had posted a net loss of Rs 477 crore in the corresponding quarter of the previous fiscal.

Revenue from operations fell 2.5 per cent year-on-year to Rs 2,788 crore in the July-September quarter from Rs 2,858 crore a year earlier. Total expenses declined 9.5 per cent to Rs 3,129 crore from Rs 3,458 crore in the year-ago period.

However, the company's earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) dropped sharply to Rs 48 crore in the September quarter from Rs 508 crore in the preceding June quarter, reflecting a significant sequential deterioration in operating performance.

On a quarter-on-quarter basis, the company swung to a net loss of Rs 324 crore from a net profit of Rs 121 crore in the June quarter.

Revenue from operations contracted 23.9 per cent sequentially to Rs 2,788 crore from Rs 3,662 crore, while total expenses declined 12.7 per cent to Rs 3,129 crore from Rs 3,586 crore.

The iron ore segment reported revenue of Rs 638 crore in the September quarter, down from Rs 1,190 crore in the preceding quarter. Segment EBITDA fell sharply to Rs 10 crore from Rs 179 crore over the same period.

The steel segment recorded revenue of Rs 2,488 crore, compared with Rs 2,839 crore in the June quarter. Its segment EBITDA declined to Rs 73 crore from Rs 336 crore sequentially.

The company's performance in the September quarter thus reflected pressure on both its iron ore and steel businesses, with a steep decline in segment earnings accompanying lower sequential revenues.
