Vedanta Oil and Gas Ltd has partnered with Beicip-Franlab India Pvt Ltd to accelerate exploration, resource maturation and production growth in Northeast India, as the Vedanta Group company steps up efforts to unlock the region’s largely untapped hydrocarbon potential.

Under the integrated seismic and subsurface programme, the two companies will cover nine Open Acreage Licensing Programme (OALP) blocks and one Discovered Small Field (DSF) block, bringing exploration, resource evaluation and development planning under a unified technical framework.

The programme has the potential to unlock up to 300 million barrels of oil equivalent (MMboe) of additional resources and reserves, while also supporting production enhancement opportunities across existing fields, Vedanta Oil and Gas said in a statement.

The collaboration is aimed at identifying new drilling opportunities and extracting additional value from existing discoveries and producing assets. Beicip-Franlab will undertake seismic interpretation, geological and reservoir studies, prospect ranking, resource assessment and field development planning across priority assets, including new and existing fields such as Hazarigaon and Rudra.

“Through Beicip-Franlab, we are bringing together advanced subsurface expertise and integrated technical capabilities to accelerate prospect maturation, strengthen our exploration portfolio and unlock greater value from existing assets,” Vedanta Oil and Gas Interim CEO and Whole-Time Director Jim Johnny Gast said.

The Northeast, he said, holds significant untapped hydrocarbon potential and remains a key pillar of Vedanta’s growth strategy.

The initiative is expected to build a pipeline of drill-ready opportunities while supporting the company’s efforts to increase domestic energy production and contribute to India’s energy security, Gast added.

The opportunities identified through the programme will subsequently move through Vedanta Oil & Gas’ technical assurance and exploration-to-development processes, the company said.

Beicip-Franlab India Managing Director Amit Singh said Vedanta has a highly prospective portfolio in Northeast India and that the objective of the partnership is to convert subsurface potential into tangible development opportunities.

Through integrated subsurface evaluations, resource characterisation and field development planning, Beicip-Franlab India will seek to enhance resource visibility, identify high-impact prospects and create a stronger pipeline of drill-ready opportunities to support sustainable production growth.

“Our purpose is to provide technical insight, strategic direction and decision-ready solutions required to accelerate the maturation of discoveries and prospects, enabling a more efficient and value-driven progression from exploration to development,” Singh said.

The partnership comes as Vedanta Oil & Gas intensifies its focus on the Northeast, particularly Assam and Tripura, as part of its broader strategy to expand domestic hydrocarbon production.

In February 2025, Vedanta Group Chairman Anil Agarwal had announced plans to invest ₹50,000 crore in Assam and Tripura’s oil and gas sector over the next three to four years, underlining the group’s growing ambitions in the region.

With the latest technical collaboration, Vedanta is seeking to turn that investment push into a larger portfolio of mature exploration prospects, development opportunities and producing assets, potentially strengthening the Northeast’s role in India’s domestic energy supply.
